ARDEN HILLS, Minn. --
Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) hit the game-winner with three seconds remaining to give the Augsburg College men's basketball team an exciting 74-72 overtime win over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Bethel's Robertson Center.
Augsburg (8-4 overall, 3-4 MIAC) was able to overcome a tough-shooting first half, taking their first lead of the game off a pair of free throws by
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) with five minutes remaining in the second period.
The final five minutes featured five lead changes and two ties, which included a jumper by Quammen with 1:01 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 62-62.
Parker Hines (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) came up with a big steal with 40 seconds remaining to give the Auggies an attempt to claim the final shot in regulation. Quammen got off a three-point attempt with five second left, but it didn't fall and the teams went to overtime.
Bethel's Zach Hurd connected on a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the extra session to give the Royals a 65-62 lead.
Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) answered for the Auggies nailing a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to put Augsburg back in the lead with a 68-65 advantage. Bethel scored a three-pointer on the following possession to again tie things up. Quammen answered with a layup with 1:34 left, giving Augsburg a 70-68 lead.
A free-throw and three-pointer for Bethel and a good jumper by Grzesiak-Grimm resulted in a 72-72 tie with 24 seconds to go. Quammen connected on the go-ahead jumper with three seconds left to put Augsburg up 74-72. The Royals got off a three-point attempt as the time ran out, but weren't able to convert as Augsburg claimed the overtime win.
Augsburg was led by Schmidt who scored a career-high 17 points, connecting on 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Grzeskiak-Grimm also finished with 17 points for the Auggies, connecting on 4-of-5 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) collected a game- and career-high 10 rebounds for Augsburg and added five points.
Bethel was led by Taylor Hall, who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-low 34.4 percent (21-of-61), while the Royals hit 45.3 percent (29-of-64) of their shots. Bethel claimed a 39-34 advantage on the boards but the big difference in the game came at the free throw line. Augsburg shot a season-high 36 free throws, converting on 27, while the Royal were only able to hit on 4-of-7.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (1/12) when it travels to St. Paul to take on Macalester College in MIAC action.
