Auggies fall in final minute

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Sherif Soud (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) tied the game for Augsburg College with 4:05 remaining, but Gustavus Adolphus College scored the game-winner with 42 seconds left in the game, as the Gusties scored a 2-1 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Gustavus.

Soud scored his first goal of the season from Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) on a header in the box in the 86th minute for Augsburg (8-4-1 overall, 4-3-0 MIAC).

"Sherif has worked hard to get on the field and he made a difference in his opportunity. That was great to see," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker.

But Gabe Steinborn scored off a rebound with 42 seconds remaining in the game for Gustavus (13-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 MIAC).

"Definitely an unfortunate result. Their goal at the very end was heartbreaking," Holker said. "The service into Lilly hit him in the back and bounced off Mathias's leg, as he was retreating, into Lilly's path to goal. Lilly got past Danny Osip (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) came out to make a great save, but the rebound hung up in the middle of the box for Steinborn to put into the open goal. Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) made an effort to cover the line, but he was helpless at that moment. Very tough way to go down after battling the early deficit to get level with four minutes to go."

Gustavus entered the game ranked No. 10 in the latest D3soccer.com Division III national poll and No. 13 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association Division III national poll, while Augsburg was ranked No. 21 in the NSCAA poll. Gustavus and Augsburg are ranked second and third, respectively, in the latest NSCAA North Region rankings.

Gustavus had taken a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, as Zach Brown scored his 10th goal of the season, assisted by Eric Schneider.

""I thought the first goal was eerie, as it just crawled into the goal," Holker said. "Brown just bent it in the far corner from the corner of the box, but it seemed harmless when it left his foot. I am guessing the St. Peter wind aided that ball as it turned in off the post. Credit to him for taking it as well as he did."

Augsburg outshot Gustavus by an 8-7 margin, with Soud and Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) collecting two shots apiece. Morlock collected two saves in goal for the Auggies, while Brett Ylonen had three saves for Gustavus.

""I thought overall it was a good game," Holker said. "When Gustavus was able to switch the field side to side they became good, and when we didn't allow that we were much better. They countered more than I expected - I thought they would have had more of the ball than they did in the game."

Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (10/18) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference game at Edor Nelson Field.

"Our ideas in the final third need to improve to take some pressure off our back four," Holker said. "Right now, we are much too direct and that hasn't posed much of a threat to our opponents in the past week. Tuesday will be a good match for us to try to figure out a different solution before we host Hamline on Friday night in MIAC action."
