Auggies net 3-0 win over Pioneers

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Goalkeeper Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) collected three saves for his 11th career shutout, and Augsburg College pulled away in the second half for a 3-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in a nonconference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon.

Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) scored in the eighth minute for the Auggies (8-1-1 overall), ranked No. 23 in the latest D3soccer.com Division III national poll. Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Chinyan Ollor (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored second-half goals.

Sankoh put the Auggies on the board early, scoring his second goal of the season, assisted by Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS), just 7:09 into the contest.

"I thought we were a little flat in the first half. The early goal was good for the score line, but maybe not for our effort. We lost a ton of 50-50 balls and were really sloppy in the back. Morlock saved us once or twice during that stretch," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "In the second half, we were much more interested and engaged in the game. I didn't feel they had any chances once we got going, and we left three or four more goals out on the field."

Gilmer gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with his second goal of the season, assisted by Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.), on a goal off a free kick in the 55th minute. In the 79th minute, Ollor collected his second goal of the season, with an assist going to goalkeeper Morlock on a punt and Josh Sweeney (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).

"Gilmer and Osborn changed the game for us when they got involved at halftime. Chad's goal was fantastic off a great Matt Bowman service, while Osborn broke everything up and kept us in their half of the field," Holker said. "Sankoh was dangerous all game and did very well to hold the ball for us as Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) was struggling from the beating he took all weekend. His finish was very composed off of Ozzy's quick switch on a counter attack. Chinyan was composed on his finish, pushing it past the goalkeeper and slotting it into an open goal."

Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-Platteville (5-7-1 overall) by a 16-6 margin, including a 9-1 advantage in the second half. Morlock claimed his third shutout of the season, and his 11th in his 18 career starts as an Auggie.

Jared Kuehl claimed seven saves in goal for the Pioneers.

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (10/8) at 7 p.m., with an important Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest against Carleton at Edor Nelson Field.

"We face our most challenging portion of the schedule in the next two weeks, as we face the top teams in the MIAC," Holker said. "We have had some fantastic games with Carleton and I don't expect this to be anything other than that once again. Ryan Camarota and Tim Wills pose a constant threat and Miles Silbert is always dangerous to get behind us. We will have to be on our best to win that game."
