Swimmers open season at Pentathlon

RESULTS

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's swimming team opened its 2011-12 season with a solid performance at its annual Augsburg Pentathlon competition, held on Saturday at the St. Catherine Butler Center pool.

Augsburg finished third in the four-team women's meet with 562 points. The meet featured five women's and five men's events, with 100-yard events in each of the five disciplines -- butterfly, backstroke, individual medley, breaststroke and freestyle. Nine Augsburg swimmers competed at the event.

Maggie Royce (FY, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS), competing in her first collegiate meet, led the way for Augsburg with 127 individual points, placing 15th among the 41 swimmers in the meet. She finished 11th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.81), 12th in the 100-yard individual medley (1:13.20), 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.52), 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:26.90) and 20th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.20).

Samantha Hebzynski (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) finished 21st in individual points with 95, with a 16th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.66) and 18th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Kayla Mitchell (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Insight School of Minnesota) finished 22nd in individual points with 93, with an 18th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:15.45) and a 19th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:26.90).

Kelsey Hlavac (SO, Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley HS) finished 11th for the Auggies in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.09).

Augsburg returns to action on Friday (10/28) at 5 p.m., competing at the University of St. Thomas Relays.
