CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOOTBALL TEAMS (CoSIDA)
MINNEAPOLIS -- Three Augsburg College football players were named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) squad, it was announced on Thursday.
Tight end
Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.), offensive lineman
Eric Dooley (JR, Eagan, Minn.) and linebacker
Bryce Vee (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned a spot on the 24-player Academic All-District squad, made up of Division III student-athletes from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Dooley earned Academic All-District honors for the second straight year, after earning second-team honors in 2010. It's the first Academic All-District honor for both Carl and Vee.
An accounting major with a 3.50 grade-point average, Carl has had a career year in 2010, leading the Auggies in both receptions (54) and receiving touchdowns (five), while standing second in receiving yardage (599). Carl has had back-to-back career-best performances in Augsburg's last two games -- a 10-reception, 103-yard, two-touchdown effort in Augsburg's 31-23 win over Macalester on Oct. 29, and an 11-catch, 115-yard, two-touchdown performance in Augsburg's 37-20 win at Gustavus last Saturday. Carl earned D3football.com Team of the Week honors for his efforts against Macalester.
Carl currently leads the MIAC's overall statistics in receptions per-game (6.00) and stands sixth in receiving yardage per-game (66.6), both totals tops among conference tight ends.
A physics/secondary education major with a 3.59 grade-point average, Dooley has started 19 straight games, and 24 of his 27 career games, on the offensive line. On the season, Dooley has been part of a line that has produced 381.3 yards per-game of total offense (3,432 yards) -- 2,167 passing yards (240.8 per-game) and 1,265 rushing yards (140.6 per-game) -- while surrendering just 13 quarterback sacks, tied for the second-fewest among MIAC teams in overall statistics.
Over the past three seasons (29 games), Augsburg has produced 10,345 yards (356.7 per-game) of total offense -- 7,141 passing (246.2 per-game) and 3,204 rushing (110.5 per-game) -- while giving up just 34 quarterback sacks. Dooley was an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2010.
A business administration major with a 3.65 grade-point average, Vee currently leads the Auggies with 97 tackles (24 solo), including 4.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, an interception, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles. Vee currently stands second among MIAC players (overall statistics) in tackles per-game (10.8). Vee has had double-digit tackle totals in five of his nine games this season, including a career-high 17 against Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 15, tied for the second-most tackles in a single game in the MIAC this year.
In his 28-game Auggie career, Vee has 183 total tackles (52 solo), including 6.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, an interception, seven pass breakups, a fumble recovery, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Vee was an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2010.
The Capital One Academic All-District team is part of the Capital One Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from Division III programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are eligible for inclusion on the District 6 team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.
This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America program, as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. First-team Academic All-District members will advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members.
Under seventh-year head coach
Frank Haege, Augsburg is 6-3 overall, 4-3 in MIAC play. With last week's win over Gustavus, the Auggies clinched its 13th above-.500 finish in school history and first since a 6-4 overall (5-4 MIAC) finish in 1999. Augsburg closes its season this Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m., hosting Bethel at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
