2011 MIAC MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS
MINNEAPOLIS -- Seven Augsburg College men's soccer players earned honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their play during the 2011 season, it was announced on Thursday.
Earning All-MIAC honors were defenders
Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Four Auggies earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors -- forward
Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.), defender
Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway), goalkeeper
Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.), and midfielder
Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS). Midfielder
Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
Last year's MIAC Player of the Year, Gilmer earned his third straight all-conference honor, after being named All-MIAC in 2010 and All-MIAC honorable-mention in 2009. Loyd earned all-conference honors for the fourth straight year -- All-MIAC honors in 2011, 2010 and 2009, and All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2008. Gobana earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors for the second straight year, as did Bowman with his All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honor. This year's all-conference honorable-mention honors were the first for Macody Lund, Morlock and Osborn.
Playing in 14 games this season after missing four games due to injury, Gilmer continued to shine as one of the most versatile players on the team, scoring three goals for six points on the season. He started the season as one of the backbones of Augsburg's defense, then contributed throughout the field after returning from a three-game stretch due to injury late in the season.
In his three seasons at Augsburg (53 games, 52 starts), Gilmer now has 12 goals and six assists for 30 career points.
Loyd had the highest-scoring year of his career in 2011, scoring three goals with two assists for eight points. He started every game and appeared in a team-high 1,543 minutes of the team's 1,680 played this season (91.8 percent).
Starting 79 of Augsburg's 80 games in his four years, Loyd was the anchor of a defense that surrendered just 58 goals (0.69 goals-against-average) in his career, with 42 shutouts. Loyd finished his career with nine goals and three assists for 21 points.
Gobana proved to be a reliable midfielder throughout the 2011 season, finishing with two goals and five assists for nine points in 16 games (14 starts). Seven of those points came in one game, as he scored two goals and added three assists in Augsburg's 7-1 win at Bethel on Sept. 14. In his 55 career games as an Auggie (45 starts), he scored 10 goals and added 11 assists for 31 points, including two game-winning goals.
Macody Lund joined the Auggies this season and was an immediate contributor on defense, starting 16 games. Augsburg's defense allowed just 12 goals this season (0.64 goals-against-average) with 10 shutouts. Offensively, Macody Lund contributed two goals and five assists for nine points, including the lone goal in Augsburg's 1-0 win at Macalester on Sept. 21.
Morlock split time in goal with teammate
Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS), and the duo proved to be a solid force. Morlock appeared in nine games this season with a 5-2-1 record, five shutouts and just five goals allowed (0.59 goals-against-average). His 0.59 GAA was second-lowest among MIAC goalkeepers in overall statistics, and his five shutouts were tied for third-most. In his two seasons as an Auggie (23 games), he has a 14-6-2 record, 13 shutouts and a 0.82 GAA. His 14 wins are fourth-best in school history, while his 13 shutouts are third-best.
Osborn was a strong midfielder, often assigned to mark the opponent's top scoring threats in games. Starting all 18 games, he played in 1,288 minutes (76.7 percent of team's minutes played) and contributed three assists. He also earned MIAC Player of the Week honors when he contained the top scorers from both Macalester and St. Thomas in two 1-0 wins. In 73 career games played, Osborn had eight assists.
Bowman was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. This season, Bowman appeared in 18 games, with a goal and four assists for six points.
In August 2008, Bowman collapsed and nearly died during an Augsburg preseason scrimmage, and he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition that forced him to have open-heart surgery. He missed the entire 2008 season, but returned to play in 2009. In 75 games in his career, he finished with three goals and 19 assists for 25 points, the 19 assists tying him for second-most in school history in that category.
Under eighth-year head coach
Greg Holker, Augsburg finished 10-5-3 overall, 6-3-1 in MIAC play in 2011, reaching the MIAC postseason playoffs for the fourth time in the last six years. Augsburg has won 69 games (69-33-15, .654 winning percentage) during the past six seasons.
