Wicks scores twice in Auggie win

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jamison Wicks (FY, Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) scored his first two collegiate goals, leading Augsburg College to a 3-2 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Wicks gave the Auggies (2-3-0 overall) the lead twice in the first period -- on an even-strength goal from Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) at the 10:59 mark, and on a power-play goal from #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) at the 19:49 mark.

Branden Gay (SR, Calgary, Alberta/St. Mary's HS) and Mike Hartviksen (SO, Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate HS) had a goal and an assist each for Wisconsin-Stout (4-3-0 overall).

"It's great to win the home opener," said Augsburg head coach Chris Brown. "The boys wanted to play well for the Auggie fans and they did. We are still working on playing a solid 60 minutes, but the bottom line is that we did enough to win a tight game against a very good team. We generated some good offense in the first two periods and made enough plays to hold the lead in the final period."

All the scoring took place in the first period. Landon Olson (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) at the 4:22 mark, but the Blue Devils tied the game on Gay's power-play goal at the 8:49 mark, assisted by Sam Carr (JR, Roseau, Minn.) and Hartviksen.

Augsburg took the lead just 2:14 later on Wick's first goal of the game, but Wisconsin-Stout answered just as quickly, just 1:59 later on Hartviksen's goal from Gay and Logan Maly (SO, Rio, Wis./Sun Prairie HS).

Seventeen seconds after going on a 4-on-3 power play in the final minute of the first period, Wicks gave the Auggies the lead on his goal from B.J. McClellan and Hines.

The two teams each had 24 shots on-goal in the first two periods, but Wisconsin-Stout outshot Augsburg by an 11-5 margin in the third period, en route to a 35-29 advantage in the game. Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 33 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Tom Lescovich (JR, Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) had 26 saves for the Blue Devils.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a series against St. John's. Next Friday's (11/18) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (11/19) game is at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Wisconsin-Stout travels to Wisconsin-Superior for a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series next weekend.

"Getting the win is most important, and as important is that there are a lot of positives to build on with this win as we head into MIAC play next week," Brown said.
