3rd period outburst nets Auggie win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Using a 10-3 shots-on-goal outburst in the third period, the Augsburg College men's hockey team scored a 3-2 victory over visiting St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Tied 1-1 after two periods, Augsburg (3-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC) scored twice in the opening 7:19 of the final frame. Loren Egan (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) tipped home a shot by Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) at the 1:39 mark, and at the 7:19 mark, Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) scored on an unassisted tally.

The Johnnies (1-4-1 overall, 0-3-0 MIAC) scored on an extra-attacker, power-play goal by Josh Gross (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) with 1:59 left, but could not get the equalizer in the final minutes.

St. John's outshot Augsburg by a 22-10 margin through the first two periods, but Augsburg goalie Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 21 saves, en route to a 23-save effort for the win. Tony Civello (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 17 saves for St. John's.

Augsburg opened the scoring just 3:18 into the game, as Jamison Wicks (FY, Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) scored his third goal of the campaign, a power-play goal from Derek Loisel (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.). The Johnnies tied the game at the 9:32 mark, as John Haeg (FY, Lakeville, Minn.) scord from Gross and Nick Roscoe (SR, Eau Claire, Wis.). Haeg and Michael Palmiscno (JR, East Grand Forks, Minn.) assisted on Gross' third-period goal.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/19) at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
