Auggies win exhibition contest

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored the game-winning goal at the 16:49 mark of the third period, giving the Augsburg College men's hockey team a 1-0 win over the Norway Under-18 National Team in an exhibition game on Wednesday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

McClellan scored on the power play from Jamison Wicks (FY, Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) with just under 11 seconds left in the contest, which was played in three 17-minute periods.

Casey O'Connor (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 28 saves in goal for Augsburg, which outshot the Norwegian squad by a 31-28 margin.

The Norwegian Under-18 National Team is on a tour of games against Minnesota amateur and college teams this week. Because it is an exhibition game, statistics and records will not count for Augsburg's overall record.

#J.P. Perpich# (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had five shots for the Auggies, while John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) had four shots and McClellan and Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) had three shots apiece.

For the Norwegian squad, Joachim Svendsen had 17 saves in goal, while Edvart Andreas Vinjar Saugen had 13 saves. Each goalie played a period-and-a-half in the game. Markus Bilstad Pedersen and Kristian Nervik Nilsen had four shots each, with Jorgen Kvarud Karterud recording three shots.

Augsburg returns to action this weekend with two nonconference games in Wisconsin -- at Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday (11/4) at 7 p.m., and at defending NCAA Division III national champion St. Norbert (Wis.) on Saturday (11/5) at 7 p.m.
