McCourt, Opsal earn all-conference honors

MIAC VOLLEYBALL AWARDS

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Augsburg College setter Emily McCourt (SO, Sun Prairie, Wis.) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball team, while defensive specialist Amy Jo Opsal (SR, North Mankato, Minn./St. Clair HS) earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors, it was announced on Wednesday.

McCourt, a first-time all-conference selection, finished the season with a team-high 1,006 assists and a 10.06 assist per-set average. McCourt also recorded a team-high 50 service aces, as well as 32 blocks (three solo) and 194 digs. McCourt finished the 2011 season ranked second in the conference in assists per-set, and fourth in total aces recorded during conference matches.

During her two-year career at Augsburg, McCourt ranks fifth all-time in career assists with 1,883, and ranks second all-time in career assists per-set with an 8.80 average.

Amy Jo Opsal
Opsal was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Opsal saw time this season as a defensive and serving specialist for the Auggies, and recorded 156 digs and 17 service aces on the season.

Under second-year head coach Jane Becker, the Auggies finished the season with a 16-12 overall record, and a fifth-place finish in the conference standings. The Auggies qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the second time in the last three years, and will return all but one letterwinner to next year's team.
