Serenae Levine (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) led Augsburg College with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds, but the Auggies were not able to keep up with undeafeated St. Olaf College and dropped a 62-55 contest in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Skoglund Center.
Augsburg (3-3 overall, 2-3 MIAC) finished with four players in double-figures, led by Levine's 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Brittany Zins (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) posted her fifth consecutive double-digit performance, finishing with 12 points and four rebounds. Newcomer
Kendra Ware (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) continued her strong play, finishing with 11 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, while adding five rebounds.
Nikki Borkhuis (SR, Watertown, S.D.) tied a career-high, finishing with 10 points.
St. Olaf (7-0 overall, 4-0 MIAC) was led by Kirstee Rotty, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Auggies battled basket-for-basket with the Oles over the opening 14 minutes of action. A Ware jumper at the 6:30 mark tied things up at 19-19, but St. Olaf closed the half on a 15-6 run and took a 34-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
In the second half, St. Olaf extended its lead to 14, but Augsburg put together an 11-3 run, including a three-pointer by Ware to cut the Ole lead to 45-40. St. Olaf again brought its lead to double digits before the Auggies could put together another run and cut the Ole lead to 55-50 with 1:34 to play. St. Olaf converted 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 42 seconds to hang on for the 62-55 win.
For the game, Augsburg outshot St. Olaf, connecting on 46.7 percent (21-of-45) of its shots, while St. Olaf hit 43.1 percent (22-of-51) of its shots. The Oles claimed a narrow 30-28 advantage on the boards but were able to get to the free-throw line 25 times compared to only 15 attempts for the Auggies.
Augsburg is idle during finals week and returns to action next Saturday (12/17) for a nonconference contest in Roseville, Minn. against Northwestern College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
