Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) posted his second consecutive 20-point game to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team past Randolph College (Va.) in a 64-55 nonconference victory in the San Juan Classic on Monday evening.
Schmidt finished with 23 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and an 11-for-12 night at the free-throw line. Also finishing in double-figures for Augsburg was
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS), who finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Randolph (6-4 overall) was led by Chris Battaglia, who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
After trailing 32-21 at the half, Augsburg put together a strong second half of basketball, shooting more than 50 percent from both the field and beyond the arc. The Auggies outscored Randolph 22-5 over the first 8:37 of the second half and were able to hit a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line in the final minute to earn the 64-55 victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the floor, while Randolph connected on 38.8 percent (19-of-49) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a 31-28 advantage on the boards and connected on 16-of-18 from the charity stripe.
Augsburg is idle for the remainder of the holiday break and returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m., when it hosts Macalester College at Si Melby Hall.
