Soccer teams earn NSCAA Team Academic Awards

2011 NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's and women's soccer teams have both earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2011 season, with the Auggie women recording a team grade-point average of 3.31 and Auggie men recording a team GPA of 3.29.

It marks the sixth straight season that Augsburg's men's soccer team has earned NSCAA Team Academic Award honors. Augsburg recorded a 3.23 GPA in 2010, a 3.42 team GPA in 2009, 3.29 team GPA in 2008, a 3.20 team GPA in 2007 and a 3.08 team GPA in 2006.

It also marks the third straight year that Augsburg's women's soccer team has earned NSCAA Team Academic Award honors, after recording a 3.48 team GPA in 2010 and a 3.32 team GPA in 2009.

There were a total of 787 programs in all divisions of NCAA and NAIA college soccer (219 men, 568 women) to earn NSCAA Team Academic Award honors with team GPAs of 3.00 or higher, with 152 colleges and universities having both their men's and women's teams honored. Among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools, seven men's teams and 10 women's teams were honored.

Augsburg's soccer programs both had successful seasons in 2011. The Auggie men, under eighth-year head coach Greg Holker, finished 10-5-3 overall, 6-3-1 in MIAC play in 2011, reaching the MIAC postseason playoffs for the fourth time in the last six years. Augsburg has won 69 games (69-33-15, .654 winning percentage) during the past six seasons. 

Under 13th-year head coach Mike Navarre, Augsburg's women's team finished the 2011 season at 9-8-1 overall, 6-4-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg has recorded eight or more victories in women's soccer in eight of the last 10 seasons. Augsburg finished in fifth place in the MIAC standings, the sixth time in the last eight seasons that Augsburg has finished in the top five in the MIAC standings.
