Parker Hines (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored 15 points and a game-high eight assists to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 86-55 win over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg remains unbeaten on the season, moving to 5-0 overall (3-0 MIAC), while Bethel falls to 4-2 overall (1-1 MIAC). Bethel was led by Daniel Baah, who finished with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds.
Augsburg had five players finish in double figures and 14 different Auggies saw action in the contest. Augsburg sharpshooters
Brett Sorenson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) combined to go 6-for-8 from beyond the arc and finished with 13 points apiece.
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) each had 11 points, while
Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) led the Auggies with seven rebounds.
Despite a tough-shooting first half, Augsburg was able to use solid defense and 20 trips to the free-throw line to take a 36-17 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Auggies came out firing on all cylinders in second half, connecting on three-pointers by Hines, Sorenson and Schmidt in the opening minute-and-a-half of action. Augsburg started the second half on an 18-6 run and never looked back, extending the lead to as many as 38 points before cruising on to an 86-55 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the floor, while holding Bethel to 35.6 percent (21-of-59). Augsburg dominated on the boards, claiming a 45-34 advantage in rebounding and shot a season-high 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from beyond the arc.
Augsburg and Bethel both return to action on Wednesday (12/7) with Augsburg traveling down to St. Peter to take on Gustavus Adolphus College, while Bethel plays host to Carleton College. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
