MIAC MEN'S BASKETBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College post player
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
Polta has been a major factor in Augsburg's 4-0 start to the season. He has averaged 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per-game so far this season, the point total ranking fourth among MIAC players in overall statistics, the rebound total ranking eighth and his 1.5 blocked shots per-game ranking second. He is also connecting on 68.3 percent of his field-goal attempts (28-of-41), second-best in the league.
Opening conference play last Wednesday, Polta scored 11 points with nine rebounds, a block and a steal in
Augsburg's 60-45 victory over St. John's. In Saturday's
75-59 win over Concordia-Moorhead, Polta scored a career-high 27 points and claimed his eighth career double-double with 10 rebounds.
A four-year veteran and three-year starter for the Auggies, Polta earned All-MIAC honors last season, when he averaged 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per-game.
Augsburg hosts Bethel on Monday (12/5) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies will travel to St. Peter, Minn., to face Gustavus on Wednesday (12/7) at 7:30 p.m., and host Central (Iowa) in a nonconference game on Saturday (12/10) at 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
