MINNEAPOLIS -- Ten different Augsburg College players figured in the scoring, as a balanced Auggie attack prevailed over St. Mary's University 4-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey action on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.
St. Mary's (4-14-2 overall, 3-6-2 MIAC) scored the lone goal of the first period, but the Auggies (9-8-3 overall, 3-6-2 MIAC) rallied with two second-period goals to claim a 2-1 lead going into the third period.
Augsburg's first goal was scored by #B.J. McClellan# (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) at the 12:33 mark, assisted by
Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS).
Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored the go-ahead goal on the power play for the Auggies at 19:03 of the second, assisted by
David Hines (JR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and
Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS).
A physical third period saw each team scoring twice. The Cardinals' Tommy Healy scored at the 4:01 mark, assisted by Nick Nagel, to tie the game at 2-2. Augsburg scored the next two goals at 6:46 and 8:36 respectively.
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and
Loren Egan (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino Grace HS) scored for the Auggies on even-strength goals, giving Augsburg a 4-2 advantage. St. Mary's Bobby Thompson scored at 17:58 with the extra skater to bring the score to 4-3, but that is where things would stay as Augsburg hung on for the win.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/29) at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn. at the SMU Ice Arena.
