Cold shooting leads to Auggie loss at SJU

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- A season-low shooting performance proved to be the Auggies downfall, as they fell 85-59 to Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon Sexton Arena.

Augsburg (12-9 overall, 7-9 MIAC) finished with three players in double figures. Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and Tyler Schmidt (SO, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) recorded 12 points apiece, while Parker Hines (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) finished with 10.

St. John's (10-10 overall, 6-9 MIAC) was led by Sam Blank who finished with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 7-of-8 from three-point range.

A tough shooting afternoon for the Auggies, in conjunction with a hot-shooting day for the Johnnies was the summary of the game. Augsburg struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half, while SJU hit 60 percent from the floor and 6-of-7 from three-point range. The first half lead proved to be too much for the Auggies to overcome as the Johnnies went on the claim the 85-69 win.

For the game, Augsburg shot as season-low 28.8 percent (17-of-59), while the Johnnies connected on 52.5 percent (32-of-61) from the floor, including 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from beyond the arc. St. John's finished with a 38-34 advantage on the boards but the Augsburg bench was able to outscore the Johnnie bench 32-13.

Augsburg and St. John's both return to action on Wednesday (2/9) with Augsburg traveling to Concordia and St. John's traveling to take on Macalester.
