MINNEAPOLIS --
Serenae Levine (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished one rebound shy of a triple-double, but it wasn't enough as the Augsburg College women's basketball team fell 75-57 to league-leading Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Levine led Augsburg (5-16 overall, 4-14 MIAC) with 13 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds as she nearly claimed a triple-double on the afternoon. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Brittany Zins (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor.
Nikki Borkhuis (JR, Watertown, S.D.) and
Brittany Dyshaw (SO, Eagan, Minn.) finished with 10 points apiece for the Auggies.
Saint Benedict (18-3 overall, 15-3 MIAC) was led by Amy Stifter and Hannah Hylla. Stifter finished with 16 points, including a 9-of-10 performance at the free throw line, while Hylla recorded 11 points and five rebounds.
After a very close first half of basketball, that saw eight lead changes and two tied scores, St. Ben's took a 29-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Blazers outscored Augsburg 24-8 over the first 10 minutes of the second half but the Auggies scrappy defense cut the lead to 12 with just under five minutes to play. Despite two players fouling out, the Auggies played hard until the end but were unable to finish the comeback as they fell 75-57 to the Balzers.
For the game, Augsburg shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56), while the Blazers converted on 41.5 percent (22-of-53) of their shots from the floor. Augsburg claimed a 38-34 advantage on the boards but was outshot at the three point line by the Blazers who connected on 8-of-24, while the Auggies were only able to hit 1-of-8.
Augsburg and Saint Benedict both return to action on Wednesday (2/9) with Augsburg traveling to Moorhead to take on Concordia College and St. Ben's hosting Macalester.
