Kylee Persing (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) hit a home run in each game, and
Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) drove in four runs in the doubleheader, as the Augsburg College softball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight games with a sweep of St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (13-7 overall, 2-0 MIAC) came from behind with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score a 5-4 win over St. Catherine (3-11 overall, 0-2 MIAC) in the first game, then used a six-run sixth inning to score an 11-3 win in a game ended early due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game, Augsburg rallied with two outs for the victory, as
Jessa Hinz (SR, Richfield, Minn.) drove in two runs on a double to left-center to tie the game, and Dorale plated Hinz with a run-scoring single to end the game.
The win capped a complete-game effort for Persing in the pitcher's circle, as she struck out one while walking one to improve to 10-5 on the season. Persing also helped her own cause with a solo home run in the second inning. An RBI double by
Laura Strandell (SR, Pine Island, Minn.) in the fourth inning accounted for the other Auggie run.
St. Catherine pitcher Kayla Bergerson (SR, Anoka, Minn.) threw a complete game, striking out two while walking two, and also helped her own cause with a three-run homer in the first inning. Shae Elliott (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit a solo homer for the Wildcats in the sixth.
In the second game, Augsburg ended the game early with a six-run sixth inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Dorale hit a two-run double,
Jennifer Castillo (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit a run-scoring single,
Brittney Bruzek (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) drove in a run on a groundout, and
Shayna Crandall (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) plated the final two runs on a single.
Persing again put the Auggies on the scoreboard first, hitting a solo homer in the second inning. An RBI triple by Dorale gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but St. Catherine tied the game in the top of the fourth, as an RBI double by Alyssa McKee (FY, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and RBI single by Regan Kriechbaum (SO, Faribault, Minn.) gave the Wildcats two runs. Kriechbaum also had an RBI ground-rule double in the sixth inning.
Augsburg took the lead back with a run on an RBI single by
Stephanie Saxe (JR, Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS) in the fourth inning, and two more runs came across in the fifth, as Hinz tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and Dorale scored on a double by Bruzek.
Crandall picked up her second complete-game win of the season for the Auggies, striking out three while walking one to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (4/5) at 4 p.m., hosting St. Thomas at Edor Nelson Field. St. Catherine hosts Carleton on Sunday (4/3) at 1 p.m.
