Comeback win leads to split against Knights

NORTHFIELD, Minn.-- Shayna Crandall (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) drove home the game winning run with a line drive base hit through the middle as the Augsburg softball team erased a five-run deficit to win game one of a Minnesota Inercollegiate Athletic Conference double-header against Carleton College Saturday afternoon. 

Augsburg (15-11 overall, 4-4 MIAC) won game one 8-7, while Carleton (10-14 overall, 4-4 MIAC) salvaged a split of the two game series with a 9-5 win in the second game. Both teams currently sit in a tie for fifth-place in the MIAC regular season standings.

In game one, Augsburg fell behind 5-0 early in the contest before rallying to score three runs in the fifth inning, one in the six, and four more in the seventh to earn the win. 

Jessa Hinz (SR, 5-7 Richfield, Minn.) hit a two out single in the top of the fourth inning drove home two Augsburg runners. Hinz went 5-for-7 with a walk, a run scored and three runs batted in during the double-header, while teammate Laura Strandell (SR, Pine Island, Minn.) went 4-for-8 with a double, stolen base, and three runs scored to lead the Augsburg offensive attack.

Jennifer Castillo (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) added a 3-for-5 day at the plate and scored two runs for Augsburg, while Kylee Persing (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) added two doubles, a run scored and an RBI in game two. 

In the circle, Crandell earned the win for Augsburg in game one, striking out 11 to earn her second complete game victory of the season. Crandell's record now stands at 4-2 on the season.

For Carleton, Jenny Ramey (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) went 3-for-7 and hit her fourth home run of the season, while Jocelyn Friedman (SO, Mount Kisko, N.Y./Fox Lane) went 3-for-6 with a five runs batted in and two runs scored. Friedman also hit her fourth home run, a three-run shot to center field in game one.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (4/13) as they host Saint Mary's University in a MIAC double-header at Edor Nelson Field.
