Auggies named to All-MIAC baseball squad

2011 ALL-MIAC BASEBALL TEAM

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College shortstop Donald Blunt (SR, Richfield, Minn.), first baseman Tom Petersen (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and designated hitter Adam Seaman (JR, Richfield, Minn.) earned spots on the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball team, it was announced this week.

Also, Augsburg third baseman Mason Holmquist (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) was named to the MIAC's All-Defensive Team, and pitcher Bryant Nordby (SR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

The honor is the second all-conference award for Blunt, who earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2009. It is the first all-conference honors for Petersen, Seaman, Holmquist and Nordby.

Donald Blunt
Blunt finished the 2011 season as the MIAC's leader in overall home runs with six. He hit .316 this season (30-of-95) with 21 runs scored, 25 RBI, five doubles and two triples, five stolen bases, a team-best .600 slugging percentage and .425 on-base percentage. His .600 slugging percentage was fourth-best in the MIAC in overall play. Blunt had a hit in 20 of his 32 games played, including seven multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games.

A four-year starter (135 starts in 139 career games), Blunt finished his career with a .283 batting average (119-of-420), with 20 doubles, 10 triples, 15 home runs, 87 runs scored, 77 RBI, 29 stolen bases, a .486 slugging percentage and a .365 on-base percentage.

Tom Petersen
Petersen shined in his first season as Augsburg's starting first baseman, hitting .317 (26-of-82) with 11 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, 15 RBI, a .402 slugging percentage and a .387 on-base percentage. Defensively, he had just four errors in 180 chances (.978 fielding percentage). He had a hit in 15 of his 29 games played, including nine multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games. He also appeared in three games as a pitcher this season.

In his Auggie career (66 games, 59 starts), Petersen has a .291 career batting average (51-of-175), with 28 runs scored, 10 doubles, a triple, a home run, 30 RBI, a .377 slugging percentage, .393 on-base percentage and .976 fielding percentage (seven errors in 289 defensive chances).

Adam Seaman
Seaman had a career season this year as Augsburg's designated hitter, improving his batting average by 66 percentage points -- from .304 in 2010 to .370 (37-of-100) in 2011. His .370 average was tied for the eighth-best among MIAC hitters in overall statistics. Seaman also contributed seven doubles, three home runs, 23 runs scored, 20 RBI, a .530 slugging percentage and a .447 on-base percentage. His .530 slugging percentage was 10th-best among MIAC hitters, while his .447 on-base percentage was 11th-best.

In his two seasons at Augsburg after playing his first year at Division II Tarleton State (Texas), Seaman has appeared in 67 Auggie games (61 starts), with a .337 career batting average (68-of-202), with 42 runs scored, 13 doubles, one triple, 11 home run, 48 RBI, a .574 slugging percentage and .411 on-base percentage.

Mason Holmquist
Holmquist was selected as the third baseman on the MIAC's All-Defensive Team, which honors one player at each position on the field. Holmquist had a .918 fielding percentage this season, with five errors in 61 defensive chances. At the plate, Holmquist hit .293 (22-of-75), with five runs scored, a double and seven RBI.

In his Auggie career (101 games, 93 starts), Holmquist hit .250 (66-of-264), with 38 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, 38 RBI and a .907 fielding percentage (22 errors in 237 defensive chances).

Bryant Nordby
Nordby was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of play.

This season, Nordby appeared in 11 games (nine starts), with a 3-4 record and 6.84 earned-run average. In a team-high 47.1 innings pitched, Nordby collected a team-best 29 strikeouts against 14 walks and a .359 opponent batting average.

In his career, Nordby appeared in 30 games as an Auggie, with a 3-5 record, 5.32 ERA, 38 strikeouts, 20 walks and a .342 opponent batting average in 66.0 innings pitched. He also hit .225 at the plate in his career with a double, triple, home run and five RBI.

Under eighth-year head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished the 2011 season with a 11-22 record, 6-14 in MIAC play.
