BOXSCORE BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS --
Harald Fauskanger (FY, Bergen, Norway) scored off a free kick scramble in the 64th minute, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 win over Carroll University (Wis.) in a nonconference game on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Scott Clinton (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) served a free kick from 40 yards out into the box.
Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) received the service and redirected it in front, and Fauskanger connected for his first collegiate goal.
"Our goal came off a free kick, and we really needed that after yesterday's let down in that category," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Clinton served well and Loyd found a way to get it back across to Harald for a goal that stood."
Augsburg (3-0-1 overall) outshot Carroll (1-3-1) by a 23-9 margin in the victory, and Auggie goalkeeper
Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) claimed three saves for his first shutout of the season and ninth of his Auggie career.
Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) had five shots in the game for the Auggies, while
Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) and
Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) had three shots each. Fauskanger,
Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and
Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) had two shots each.
"Carroll is a difficult team to crack. They are so athletic and such a hard-working group, they really make you earn your goals," Holker said. "Harald scored one seven minutes into the game that was called back on a fantastic effort, but I thought our play overall was good in the first 25 minutes. The rain mixed things up a bit and it became a more end-to-end game, but we were able to break up their efforts before they got near our goal. Big credit to
Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) as he owned the air at center back.
Matt Bowman provided good service and G and Mo were very good, especially early."
Carroll goalkeeper Tomek Miaskowski (SO, Appleton, Wis./Xavier HS) had 11 saves in the game, while Andy Ksobiech (JR, Muskego, Wis.), Steve Koprowski (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.) and Dan Czernicki (FY, Muskego, Wis.) had two shots each.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/21) at 7:30 p.m. with a game at Macalester.
"I think this weekend's games were a good buildup to what Wednesday will bring at Macalester," Holker said. "They had a good result Friday and are always hard to beat at home. Taylor Rasmussen is a fantastic talent, but we have to find a way to stop him and the rest of his team."
