A message from Augsburg College President Paul Pribbenow:
Sept. 21, 2011
I am deeply saddened to inform you of the death of
Jason Stevens, a first-year Augsburg College Honors student from Rochester, MN, and member of the cross-country team.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Jason was struck by an unidentified vehicle on Interstate 94 late last night and died early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, classmates, teammates, professors, and coaches.
Jason's family drove up last night, and our Student Affairs staff have been working this morning to personally contact Jason's teammates, roommates, friends, and others in the community here in Minneapolis and at the College's Rochester campus.
The Augsburg College Department of Public Safety is also cooperating with the Minnesota State Patrol, which is investigating the situation. Out of respect to those who knew Jason, the College will not provide further comment on the circumstances of the event, but will defer to the Minnesota State Patrol to provide the facts.
In the near-term, we will gather as a campus community during Chapel time tomorrow, Thursday, September 22, 11:20 a.m. to remember Jason and honor his life and contributions to the Augsburg community. Student Affairs will remain in contact with the Stevens family and communicate when plans are confirmed for the memorial service.
Please keep the Stevens family in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.
Paul C. Pribbenow
President
