Auggies score 1-0 win over Tommies

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Josh Sweeney (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored for Augsburg College in the 68th minute, giving the Auggies a 1-0 triumph over the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Tyler Heaps (JR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) served the ball from the right side of the field across the box, and a header by Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) was put into the net by Sweeney for the lone goal of the game for Augsburg (6-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 MIAC), which claimed its sixth straight victory. The goal was Sweeney's fourth of the season.

Augsburg outshot St. Thomas (3-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC) by a 19-8 margin in the game, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half. Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.) collected two saves in goal for the Auggies, picking up second shutout of the season and 10th in his 17 career games.

"We found a way to win a game that we didn't necessarily play the way we would have liked," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "It was broken up and a real 'traditional' MIAC battle -- great credit to St. Thomas for their performance ... Overall, it was a great day for Augsburg Athletics. Our women's soccer team won, our football team had a massive win, and we kept another clean sheet."

Twelve different Auggies had shots in the game, led by Sweeney, Gobana and Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.), who had three shots each. Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had two shots apiece.

"I thought Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) was good tonight and Mo did much better in the second half of the game simply because he lifted his effort up," Holker said. "Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway) and Heaps were very good both directions, and Chad and Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) did what was needed to keep Mike Hutton (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.) and Nick Rapisarda (SO, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) off the board. David Scheller (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) made a difference when he entered, calming the game down for us."

Rapisarda and Hutton had two shots each for St. Thomas. Jace Leiferman (SO, North Mankato, Minn./West HS) had eight saves in goal for the Tommies.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (9/27) at 7:30 p.m., hosting St. John's at Edor Nelson Field.

"Having nine points through three conference games is good, but we have to stay focused and perform better than this on Tuesday if we want to continue securing results," Holker said. "St. John's is a very good team which has had a difficult run up to this point with their schedule and some luck. They will pose a significant threat and have one of the most dynamic talents in the league in Michael Coborn."
