MINNEAPOLIS -- Winning nine of 10 matches, including six by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg College wrestling team scored a 38-3 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead in a nonconference dual meet on Tuesday evening at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg, the No. 2-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, scored two pins, a technical fall and three major decisions to improve to 5-1 on the season. Division II MSU Moorhead is now 1-3 overall.
The Auggies claimed pins in their final two bouts from ranked wrestlers. At 197 pounds, No. 4-ranked
Brad Baus (SR, Mukwonago, Wis.) scored his 14th pin of the season with a 1:48 triumph over MSUM's Eric Lehmann (FY, Whapeton, N.D.). Baus has recorded seven pins in his last nine matches and is 19-6 on the season, 89-51 in his career.
At heavyweight, top-ranked
Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./DeSoto HS) improved to 21-1 on the season with a 4:53 pin of Gerrad Fugleberg (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS). Johnson is now 53-12 in his Auggie career.
Boyd Suparat (JR, North Branch, Minn.) used a takedown and five near-falls to score a 15-0, technical-fall victory at 133 pounds over Graelin Garlington (JR, Columbus, Miss.). Suparat built a 13-0 lead after one period and ended the match 15 seconds into the second period.
Orlando Ponce (SR, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS), ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds, claimed five takedowns and built 3:10 of riding time to score a 13-4, major-decision victory over Jacob Bennett (JR, Apache Junction, Ariz.). Ponce, a two-time national runner-up, improved to 11-0 on the season.
Will Keeter (SO, Twin Falls, Idaho), ranked No. 6 at 141 pounds, used two takedowns, a reversal and a near-fall to build 6:13 of riding time, en route to an 11-1, major-decision win over Connor MacGregor (SO, Roseau, Minn.).
Zach Enrico (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) claimed 3:09 of riding time with three takedowns and reversal to score a 9-1, major-decision win over Derek Lee (FY, Bismarck, N.D.) at 157 pounds.
Augsburg also claimed decision victories from
Jake Saatzer (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) at 149,
Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) at 174 and
Matt Hechsel (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.) at 184. Saatzer claimed a 7-4 victory over Tyler Steinwand (SR, Mandan, N.D.), Kohler scored a takedown 30 seconds into overtime to collect a 3-1 win over Trent Sovde (SR, Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River HS), and Hechsel scored a 6-2 win over Kody Kalkbrenner (SO, Litchfield, Minn.).
The Dragons' lone victory in the match came from No. 2-ranked Corey Ulmer (SR, Wishek, N.D./Ashley-Wishek HS) at 125, who scored a 10-6 win over Augsburg's
Mike Fuenffinger (FY, Hibbing, Minn.).
Augsburg's White Team (junior varsity) won eight matches in a row to score a 31-12 win over Rochester Community and Technical College in the opening match of the evening.
Noel Sweeney (SO, Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored a first-period pin at 165,
Jackson Mboma (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored a third-period technical fall at 184, and
Rashad Kennedy (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) at 149 and
Chad Bartschenfeld (FY, Amery, Wis.) at 125 scored major-decision wins.
