BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored his 1,000th career point on Monday night, but the Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 83-77 contest to rival Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Si Melby Hall.
Grzesiak-Grimm posted a 24-point, 14-rebound effort on his way to recording his 1,000th career point to lead Augsburg (11-5 overall, 8-3 MIAC). He becomes the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points and just the sixth player in Augsburg men's basketball history to score 1,000 points and pull down 600 rebounds in their career. Grzesiak-Grimm now stands at 1,011 career points and 625 career rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS),
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). Schmidt finished with 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 night from the free throw line, while Seidlitz and Polta finished with 10 points apiece. David Weber (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) posted a career-high eight assists to go along with six points and three steals.
With two 3-pointers in the game, Schmidt extended his streak of hitting at least one 3-pointer to 25 straight games, dating to last season. He has had multiple three-pointers in 12 of his 16 games this season, including the last nine games in a row.
Hamline (10-7 overall, 8-4 MIAC) was led by Mike Cambell, who finished with 18 points and five rebounds, while adding a game-high four steals and a perfect 10-of-10 performance from the free-throw line.
Augsburg scored the first two points of the game, a pair of free-throws by Grzesiak-Grimm, but that would prove to be the last lead of the night for the Auggies. Hamline was able to extend its lead to 31-18 with 4:45 to play but Augsburg put together an impressive 13-4 run to close the first half and cut the Piper lead to 35-31 at the intermission.
Augsburg scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the lead to just two, but Hamline took advantage of some Auggie miscues and extended its lead to 65-50 with 7:33 to play. Augsburg continued to chip away at the Piper lead and cut the score to 74-71 with 1:15 to play off three big free throws from Schmidt. Hamline extended the lead back to six before Schmidt connected on a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play, putting the score at 80-77. Hamline finished 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 15 seconds to hold off the Auggie comeback.
Augsburg shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field, while the Pipers connected on 48.3 percent (29-of-60) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 35-31 advantage on the boards and were able to outscore Hamline 15-5 in second chance points. The aggressive Hamline defense forced 21 Augsburg turnovers, which they converted into 29 points, proving to be the difference in the game.
Augsburg and Hamline both return to action on Wednesday (1/25) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg traveling to Arden Hills to take on the Bethel University Royals, while Hamline goes on the road to take on MIAC-leading St. Thomas.
