Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) continued his three-point streak, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team in a 72-55 loss to Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at the Robertson Center.
Schmidt extended his streak of hitting at least one 3-pointer to 26 straight games, dating to last season. He has had multiple three-pointers in 13 of his 17 games this season, including the last ten games in a row. He finished 6-of-11 from the field and added a pair of rebounds.
Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) also finished in double-figures for Augsburg (11-6 overall, 8-4 MIAC). Polta finished with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Grzesiak-Grimm finished with 12 points and four rebounds.
Bethel (9-7 overall, 5-6 MIAC) was led by the duo of Daniel Baah and Taylor Hall, who finished with 21 and 18 points respectively.
Augsburg played well in the first-half, leading by as many as six points while never allowing the Royals more than a one point advantage. The Auggies used an 8-4 run to close the first half and went into the locker room at the intermission leading 27-24. The teams continued to trade baskets during the first 10 minutes of the second-half. A Polta layup at the 8:13 mark gave the Auggies a 48-47 advantage but that was when the momentum would shift. Bethel outscored Augsburg 25-7 over the final 7:49 of play as the Royal offense caught fire and the Auggies struggled to convert offensively.
For the game, Augsburg shot 36.0 percent (18-of-50) from the field, while the Royals converted on 49.1 percent (28-of-57) of their shots. The teams were deadlocked at 32 rebounds apeice but Augsburg was outscored 32-18 in points-in-the-paint and the Auggies committed 17 turovers while the Royals only gave up six turnovers.
Augsburg and Bethel both return to action on Saturday (1/28) with Augsburg making the trip to Moorhead to take on Concordia College, while Bethel plays host to Macalester College.
