Second-half rally falls short

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) recorded his ninth double-double of the season but the Augsburg College men's basketball team's second-half rally fell short as Gustavus Adolphus hung on for a 73-63 win in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

Grzesiak-Grimm recorded game-highs in points and rebounds, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Augsburg (12-7 overall, 9-5 MIAC). Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who recorded 14 points a career-high five assists. Seidlitz has now scored in double-figures in three of his last four contests. Cory Polta (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) also had a solid night for the Auggies finishing up with nine points and seven rebounds.

Gustavus (14-5 overall, 11-3 MIAC) was led by Tyler Grey, who finished with 15 points and five assists. Grey finished 6-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 performance in the first-half.

A hot-shooting first-half for Gustavus and a cold-shooting first-half for the Auggies, led to a 40-22 lead for the Gusties at the intermission. Augsburg turned up the defensive intensity and put together a nice second-half rally. The Auggies slowly cut down the Gustavus lead out-shooting (48.4 percent-to47.8 percent) and significantly out-rebounding (23-13) the Gusties. A Grzesiak-Grimm jumper at the 1:48 mark brought the score to 67-61 but that was as close as the Auggies would get as Gustavus closed out the game at the free-throw line.

For the game, Augsburg shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field, while Gustavus converted on 56.0 percent (28-of-50) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a 34-29 advantage on the boards and outscored the Gusties 26-22 in points in the paint but the first-half deficit prooved too much to overcome.

Augsburg and Gustavus return to action on Wednesday (2/1) with Augsburg traveling to St. Paul to take on the Hamline University Pipers, while Gustavus hosts St. Olaf.
