John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.),
Landon Olson (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and
Niklas Almstrom (SO, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg (8-11-1 overall, 4-6-1 MIAC) scored three third-period goals, including an extra-skater goal with 1:16 left to cut the lead to 4-3. But St. Olaf (9-6-5 overall, 5-4-2 MIAC) scored an empty-net goal with 38 seconds left to clinch the victory.
Peter Rohn (SR, Vettre, Norway) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night to lead St. Olaf, with Jack Nicoll (JR, Lincoln, Neb.), Kevin Harris (SO, Simi Valley, Calif.) and Dylan Porter (SO, Rosemount, Minn.) adding goals.
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 45-21 margin. Ben Leis (SR, Duluth, Minn.) had 38 saves in goal for St. Olaf, while
Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 20 saves for Augsburg.
The Oles took a 2-0 first-period lead, behind Nicoll's goal from Blake Matejcek (JR, Faribault, Minn.) at the 8:00 mark, and Harris' goal from Rohn and John Avino (SO, Mount Prospect, Ill.) at the 12:28 mark.
Lennartson scored his seventh goal of the season for the Auggies at the 2:34 mark of the third period, assisted by
George Jackson (FY, Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS) and
Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
St. Olaf built a 4-1 lead with two goals from Rohn in a 29-second span -- a power-play goal from Ross Trousdale (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) and Charlie Raskob (SR, Hastings, Minn.) at the 5:50 mark, and an even-strength goal from Harris at the 6:19 mark.
Augsburg trimmed the lead to 4-2 at the 9:05 mark, as Olson scored his ninth goal of the season, a power-play marker from McClellan and
Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.). Almstrom scored his third goal of the season, an unassisted, extra-skater goal at the 18:44 mark, but Porter scored from Austin Wetmore (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) with 38 seconds left.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/4) at 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
