Auggies rally for 4-4 tie with Oles

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night, as her Augsburg College women's hockey team rallied for a 4-4, overtime tie with host St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Friday evening at the Northfield Ice Arena.

Augsburg (5-7-6 overall, 2-7-2 MIAC) rallied from a 3-0, first-period deficit to St. Olaf (5-9-4 overall, 5-4-2 MIAC) and tied the game at 4-4 with 34 seconds remaining in regulation time.

Hennessy scored an unassisted goal with four seconds remaining in the second period, then tied the game at 3-3 with a goal at the 6:11 mark of the third period for her sixth multi-goal game of the season. She has at least a goal or assist in 14 of Augsburg's 18 games this season.

Hennessy now has 18 goals on the season, a total that is currently second-most among NCAA Division III women's hockey players nationally, according to the Collegehockeystats.net website. Hennessy only trails Norwich (Vt.) senior Julie Fortier, who has 20 goals. Hennessy has the most goals among Division III rookies nationally, and the second-most points (24) among rookies. Hennessy's 18 goals are the most among MIAC players in overall statistics, and her 24 points is third-most. Hennessy's 18 goals is currently tied for the eighth-most in a single season in Augsburg history; the single-season school record is 27, set by Angie Rieger in the 1999-2000 season.

Lisa Tuuri scored two power-play goals for St. Olaf, with Nicole Stumpf and Christina Benjamin adding the other Ole goals. Margot Fleming and Kristen Latta had two assists each for the Oles.

Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Augsburg scored twice in a 20-second span to tie the game at 3-3. Jess Geisinger (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Kendall Christian (FY, Moorhead, Minn.), at the 5:51 mark, and Hennessy scored her second goal of the game, asissted by Jeanna Dudley (JR, Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community HS) and Jessica Larkin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at the 6:11 mark.

Tuuri gave the Oles the lead with a power-play goal from Latta and Fleming at the 8:54 mark of the third period, but Augsburg tied the game with an extra-skater goal at the 19:26 mark, as Sara Rajewsky (FY, Murdock, Minn./Benson HS) scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Larkin and Hennessy.

St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 42-20 margin. Crystal Amunrud (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.), making her third collegiate start in goal for the Auggies, claimed 38 saves in the draw. Sam Ubl had 16 saves for St. Olaf.

The Oles built a 3-0 lead before Augsburg made its comeback. Tuuri scored from Latta and Fleming on the power play at the 11:50 mark of the first period. In the second period, Stumpf scored from Devyn Hotho at the 10:49 mark of the second period, and Benjamin scored from Sarah Edgerton and Alison Umland at the 15:49 mark of the second period.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/4) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
