D3BASEBALL.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK (3/14/12)
NCBWA DIVISION III PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (3/15/12)
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College pitcher
Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) was named to the
D3Baseball.com Team of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Oakes was also named as one of seven honorable-mention pitching selections for the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week honors.
Making his second collegiate pitching appearance and first collegiate start, Oakes threw a seven-inning no-hitter, striking out seven, in
Augsburg's 2-0 win over Mayville State (N.D.) in the first game of a doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Friday. The no-hitter was the first thrown by an Auggie in
Keith Bateman's nine seasons as Augsburg's head coach.
Oakes allowed just five batters to reach base -- four on hit-by-pitches and one on an error -- while not walking a batter. The biggest threat came in the bottom of the seventh, when runners reached second and third on a hit batter and fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. But Oakes struck out the final batter he faced to cap the no-hitter.
On the season, Oakes is now 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, with eight strikeouts and no walks in 9.0 innings of work in two appearances.
The D3Baseball.com Team of the Week is selected by the staff of
D3Baseball.com, a national site that covers NCAA Division III baseball. Thirteen players are selected each week -- one at each defensive position, a designated hitter, three starting pitchers and a relief pitcher.
Augsburg, now 3-3 on the season, faces Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday (3/14) at 7 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Metrodome.
