ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the first game on Tuesday, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Hamline University at Midway Stadium.

Oakes claimed his second collegiate shutout in his third collegiate complete game, as the Auggies won 5-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. Augsburg lost the second game 8-3.

With the split, Augsburg (23-12 overall, 9-7 MIAC) remains in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs, with two doubleheaders remaining in the regular season. Augsburg's 23 wins are its most since 2005's 24-18 record.

Oakes struck out one and allowed just four Hamline baserunners -- on three hits and hit batter -- in improving to 5-2 on the season in his sixth collegiate start and 13th appearance.

Meanwhile, Augsburg put together an 11-hit performance, with Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) going 3-for-4 with a run scored and Ryan Sward (SO, Eagan, Minn.) going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Eight of the nine batters in the Auggie lineup claimed at least one hit in the game.

Augsburg scored first in the third inning, when Sward reached base on a fielding error and eventually scored on a single by Alec Johnson (SR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS). Two more runs came across in the fifth inning, as Sward singled and scored on a fielder's choice by Johnson, and Petersen singled and scored on a double by Gordon Kappers (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). In the seventh, a fielder's choice by Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.) plated Anderson, and Kappers scored on a single by Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.).

Jordan Rubbelke had two of Hamline's three hits in the first game. Matt Eickman took the loss for the Pipers, striking out two while walking three in 6.2 innings of work.

In the second game, Augsburg took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning, but the Pipers scored six runs, sending 10 batters to the plate, collecting six hits while taking advantage of two errors. Three of the six runs in the inning were unearned. Mark Rademacher hit a two-run double, while Jordan Buck had an RBI single and Rubbelke and Ryan Hackel had run-scoring singles.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Augsburg scored twice in the third inning, as an RBI triple by LaChapelle plated Tim Gerding (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS), and LaChapelle later scored on a wild pitch. The Auggies took their 3-2 lead in the fourth, as Kappers reached base on a throwing error, allowing Carl to score an unearned run.

Hamline scored twice in the second inning, on an RBI double by Dan Ellefson and a sacrifice fly by Rubbelke.

Craig Lynch (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) took the pitching loss for Augsburg, striking out two while walking one in five-plus innings of work. Jeff Boresz (SR, Chardon, Ohio/Mentor HS) and Dan Tombers (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) pitched in relief. Casey Benford picked up the win for Hamline, throwing a complete-game effort, striking out five while walking one.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/28) at 1 p.m., taking on St. Mary's in Winona, Minn.
