Carl named All-MIAC in baseball

2012 MIAC BASEBALL AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College shortstop Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball team, it was announced on Tuesday.

Augsburg pitcher Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) was named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team, and infielder Bobby Monsour (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. In addition, first baseman Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), outfielder Tim Gerding (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) and second baseman Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.) earned team All-MIAC Honorable Mention recognition for being nominated for an all-conference award.

Adam Carl
In his first season as the Auggies' starting shortstop, Carl hit .361 (43-of-119) with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles and team highs of three home runs and 30 RBI. He stole eight bases in nine attempts, and had a .521 slugging percentage and .414 on-base percentage. Defensively, Carl was a part of 23 double plays this season, while producing a .937 fielding percentage. His .361 batting average was eighth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics, as was his 30 RBI. In conference games-only, Carl's .413 batting average was fourth-best among league players, while his 26 hits were fourth-best, his three home runs were tied for second-best, his 19 RBI were tied for second-best and his .651 slugging percentage was fourth-best.

In his two seasons at Augsburg (47 games, 42 starts), Carl is hitting .356 (47-of-132) with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles, three home runs, 32 RBI, nine stolen bases in 10 attempts, a .500 slugging percentage and a .401 on-base percentage. Carl was one of eight sophomores named to the 27-member All-MIAC team.

Tanner Oakes
Oakes was the lone first-year player named to the 10-player All-Defensive Team, made up of one player at each position, a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher. Oakes appeared in 17 games (six starts) as a pitcher for the Auggies, with a 5-3 record, 2.93 earned-run average and 36 strikeouts against nine walks in 58.1 innings pitched, with a .258 opponent batting average. Defensively, Oakes did not have an error in 13 defensive chances this season, while five runners were thrown out trying to steal in 12 chances this year.

Oakes provided one of the biggest highlights for the Auggies this season, when he threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Mayville State (N.D.) on March 9 at the Metrodome in his second collegiate appearance and first collegiate start.

Bobby Monsour
Monsour named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

This season, Monsour hit .264 (14-of-53) in 22 games (18 starts), scoring six runs while contributing two doubles, eight RBI, a .302 slugging percentage and .322 on-base percentage. In his Auggie career (75 games, 44 starts), Monsour hit .271 (38-of-140) with 20 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, four stolen bases, 16 RBI, a .350 slugging percentage and .348 on-base percentage.

Tom Petersen
Petersen had the best hitting year of his career in 2012, hitting .371 (46-of-124) with 22 runs scored, a team-best 13 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 21 RBI, a .540 slugging percentage and .409 on-base percentage. Defensively, Petersen had a .976 fielding percentage and was a part of 27 double plays. In his four seasons at Augsburg (104 games, 97 starts), Petersen hit .324 (97-of-299), with 50 runs scored, 23 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 51 RBI, a .445 slugging percentage and .399 on-base percentage.

Tim Gerding
Gerding also had his best hitting year of his career in 2012, hitting .333 (32-of-96) with 21 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBI, a .438 slugging percentage, a .425 on-base percentage and five stolen bases in seven attempts. Defensively, he had a .986 fielding percentage, with just one error in 72 chances. A four-year starter in the outfield (139 games, 124 starts), Gerding had a .278 career batting average (94-of-338), with 75 runs scored, 16 doules, four triples, three home runs, 55 RBI, 20 stolen bases, a .376 slugging percentage and a .377 on-base percentage.

Louie Lachapelle
In his second year as Augsburg's starting second baseman, LaChapelle also had the best hitting year of his career, hitting .312 (39-of-125) with 28 runs, three doubles, three triples, a home run, 19 RBI, eight stolen bases in nine attempts, a .408 slugging percentage and .408 on-base percentage. He was also a part of 24 double plays on defense. In his three seasons at Augsburg (89 games, 72 starts), LaChapelle is hitting .270 (61-of-226) with 42 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, one home run, 21 RBI, 11 stolen bases in 13 attempts, a .323 slugging percentage and .340 on-base percentage.

Augsburg finished 24-15 overall, 10-10 in MIAC play in 2012. Augsburg's 24 victories marked the fourth time that the Auggies have won 20 or more games in head coach Keith Bateman's nine seasons at Augsburg, and the Auggies' best record since a 24-18 mark in the 2005 season.
