2012 D3FOOTBALL.COM PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS

Adam Carl
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College football player Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) was named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America squad as a second-team tight end, it was announced on Wednesday.

Carl is one of only two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players named to the 50-player, two-team squad by D3football.com, a national website that covers NCAA Division III football. St. Thomas senior Garrett James was named as a first-team center. Carl was also one of just nine juniors named to the squad, with the remaining 41 all seniors.

Carl is the third Auggie to earn Preseason All-America honors from D3football.com since the award was established in 2000; Adam Hoffmann was named as a second-team center in 2004, and Royce Winford was named as a second-team wide receiver in 2008.

The award is the second honor for Carl this preseason; he was also recently named as a second-team tight end on the preseason All-Division III Team by the Lindy's Sports 2012 National College Football preview magazine.

Carl earned All-MIAC first-team and D3football.com All-West Region second-team honors last season, leading the Auggies with 58 receptions and five receiving touchdowns, while standing second on the team with 616 receiving yards. His 5.80 receptions per-game were tops among all MIAC receivers (overall statistics), and his 61.6 receiving yards per-game were sixth-best – both per-game averages tops among MIAC tight ends. Carl also was named as a Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) honoree and was an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2011.

Carl had back-to-back career-best performances in two of Augsburg's last three games -- a 10-reception, 103-yard, two-touchdown effort in Augsburg's 31-23 win over Macalester on Oct. 29, and an 11-catch, 115-yard, two-touchdown performance in Augsburg's 37-20 win at Gustavus on Nov. 5. Carl earned D3football.com Team of the Week honors for his efforts against Macalester.

In 18 career games as an Auggie, Carl has 59 catches for 617 yards and six touchdowns.

In addition to his career season in football, Carl also had a career year in baseball this past season. In his first year as Augsburg's starting shortstop in 2012, Carl earned All-MIAC and American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second-team honors.

In 2012, Carl hit .361 (43-of-119) with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles and team highs of three home runs and 30 RBI. He stole eight bases in nine attempts, and had a .521 slugging percentage and .414 on-base percentage. Defensively, Carl was a part of 23 double plays in 2012, while producing a .937 fielding percentage. In his two seasons at Augsburg (47 games, 42 starts), Carl is hitting .356 (47-of-132) with 26 runs scored, 10 doubles, three home runs, 32 RBI, nine stolen bases in 10 attempts, a .500 slugging percentage and a .401 on-base percentage.

Augsburg's football team opens its 2012 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m., hosting Concordia University-Wisconsin at Edor Nelson Field. Frank Haege enters his eighth season as Augsburg's head coach, after leading the Auggies to a 6-4 overall (4-4 MIAC) record in 2011, the Auggies' first above-.500 campaign since 1999.
