Scott dominates, Auggies retain Hammer

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Ayrton Scott (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) threw for four touchdowns and rushed for three more, having a part in 338 yards of total offense as the Augsburg College football team claimed a 48-24 victory over host Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Klas Field.

Scott rushed for 163 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns, while completing 14-of-20 passes for 175 yards and four scores, enabling Augsburg (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) to retain "The Hammer," the traveling trophy between Augsburg and Hamline (1-2 overall, 0-2 MIAC), for the third straight year.

Tight end Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) caught four passes for 43 yards and three second-quarter touchdowns, as the Auggies ran off 27 points in the second frame to take a commanding 34-10 lead at halftime.

While the Auggie offense gained 409 yards in the game -- its third straight 400-yard game to start the season -- Augsburg's defense limited Hamline to just 274 yards of total offense (157 rushing yards, 117 passing yards) and claimed five quarterback sacks.

Since "The Hammer" traveling trophy between Augsburg and Hamline was established in 1995, Augsburg has won seven of the eight battles for the trophy. Augsburg has won nine of the last 10 and 15 of the last 17 all-time meetings against Hamline.

The Auggies never punted in the game, and after a fumble on the opening offensive play of the game, the Auggies scored touchdowns on seven consecutive drives -- including a stretch of 34 straight points after trailing 10-7 in the first quarter.

The Pipers scored first, four plays after Augsburg fumbled the football on its opening play. Austin Duncan (FY, New Orleans, La.) capped the drive with a four-yard scoring run. But Augsburg answered back, as Scott scored his first touchdown with a 20-yard run with 8:49 left in the first quarter, completing an eight-play, 70-yard drive. Scott rushed for 69 yards on five carries on the drive. The Pipers used a 14-play, 60-yard drive to take a 10-7 lead on a 34-yard field goal by John Broback (SR, Rosemount, Minn.).

Augsburg used a nine-play, 66-yard drive to begin the second-quarter scoring barrage, as Scott threw his first touchdown pass to Carl, a four-yarder. On the ensuing drive, Hamline fumbled the ball to the Auggies at the Hamline 12-yard line, and Scott ran that distance for his second rushing touchdown of the game. Scott then threw touchdown passes on consecutive drives to Carl -- a 14-yarder and a 16-yarder -- to give the Auggies a 34-10 lead at the break.

Augsburg's first drive of the second half resulted in a touchdown, as Scott finished a six-play, 59-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run. A Ryan Ferkinhoff (SO, St. Anthony, Minn.) seven-yard scoring run for the Pipers snapped the Auggie scoring stretch, but Augsburg used a 10-play, 76-yard drive to cap its scoring early in the fourth quarter, as Scott threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Waylon Hartwick (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). Zach Brautigam (SO, Dubuque, Iowa) ended the scoring in the final minute of the game with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Joel Riordan (SO, Windom, Minn.).

Phil Putratz (JR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) rushed 10 times for 58 yards for Augsburg, while catching two passes for 30 yards. Tyler Swanson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) caught two passes for 43 yards, and Jerise Washington (SO, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) caught two passes for 26 yards.

For Hamline, Ferkinhoff rushed 11 times for 77 yards, while Duncan rushed 11 times for 47 yards. Zach Deitchman (SO, Phoenix, Ariz.) caught two passes for 47 yards.

Defensively, Bryce Vee (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) led the Auggies with 13 tackles (three solo) and a half-sack, while Aaron Perry (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had eight tackles (two solo), a sack and 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Bryson Vasey (FY, Sebeka, Minn./United North Central HS), Lincoln Buege (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and Spencer Corey (SO, Roberts, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) each had sacks for the Auggies, and Dustin Buhr (SO, Byron, Minn.) shared a sack with Vee.

For Hamline, John-Michael Vandenberg (SR, Bothell, Wash.) led all players with 17 tackles (nine solo), while Patrick Page (JR, Minneapolis, Minn.) had nine tackles (four solo).

Augsburg hosts Bethel in the Auggies' Homecoming game next Saturday (9/29) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while Hamline travels to face Gustavus next Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
