Gustavus uses 2nd half rally to top Augsburg

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Rallying from a halftime tie, the Gustavus Adolphus College men's basketball team pulled away to claim a 70-59 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Four Augsburg (12-3 overall, 7-3 MIAC) players scored in double figures, led by Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who had 14 points with three assists and four rebounds. Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points. Battling foul trouble, center Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn.) scored 12 points with seven rebounds, and Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich.) scored 10 points.

Gustavus (9-6 oveall, 6-4 MIAC) was led by Jim Hill (SR, Edina, Minn.), who scored 20 points -- 14 points in the second half -- with six rebounds and three blocked shots. Ben Biewen (SR, Edina, Minn.) had 14 points with eight assists, two blocks and five rebounds, Isaac Tapp (SO, Stewartville, Minn.) scored 13 points and Brody Ziegler (FY, Mankato, Minn./East HS) scored eight points with five rebounds and two blocks.

In a game that featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes -- nine ties and seven lead changes in the first half -- Gustavus pulled away with an 18-2 run over a 8:07 span midway through the second half, taking a 56-42 advantage with 7:28 remaining. Augsburg trimmed the lead to nine points, 64-55 with 3:12 left, but the Gusties scored six straight points to build the lead back to 70-55 with 1:45 left.

Augsburg shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field in the game, while Gustavus claimed nine blocked shots as a team. Gustavus outrebounded Augsburg by a 30-27 margin, and the Gusties connected on 57.7 percent (30-for-52) shooting from the field, incluidng 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) in the second half.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/19) at 3 p.m. with home games, with Augsburg hosting St. Mary's at Si Melby Hall and Gustavus hosting Concordia-Moorhead.
