Corbin Chapman (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and 14 different Augsburg College men's hockey players figured in the scoring, as the Auggies opened their season with a 6-2 triumph over Saint Mary's University in the first game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Friday evening at Fogerty Arena.
Augsburg scored the first four goals of the game and outshot the Cardinals by a 41-22 margin in the season-opening contest for both teams. Making his fifth collegiate start and eighth appearance in goal,
John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 20 saves for Augsburg to pick up the win.
Chapman opened the scoring for the Auggies with his first collegiate goal, assisted by
Daniel Hildebrandt (JR, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) and
Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.), 6:53 into the game.
Drew Allen (SO, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with a goal from Chapman and
Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) at the 2:06 mark of the second period.
The Auggies scored twice in a 13-second span midway through the second period.
Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) scored his first collegiate goal, a power-play marker from
Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and
Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS), at the 13:14 mark, and
Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) followed with a goal from
Zach Blaisdell (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) and
Erik Ordahl (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) 13 seconds later.
St. Mary's notched its first goal just 52 seconds later, as Bobby Thompson scored on the power play. St. Mary's cut the lead to 4-2 at the 8:49 mark of the third period, as Bob Marx scored from Thompson and Brad Denney.
But Augsburg built the lead back up to four goals with two third-period markers.
Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) scored from Krieger and
Rory Vesel (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) at the 10:52 mark, and
Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) completed the scoring with a shorthanded goal at the 14:47 mark.
Mitch Fernsler had 35 saves in goal for Saint Mary's.
Augsburg faces St. Olaf in the MIAC Showcase on Saturday (11/2) at 7 p.m. at Fogerty Arena.
