McClellan's 4-goal night leads Auggies in 9-2 win

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored four goals and had one assist for a seven-point night, including a natural hat trick in the first period, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team in a 9-2 win over Northland College in nonconference action on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

McClellan scored the first three goals of the game in a 9:23 span midway through the first period, then added his fourth goal in the third period for the Auggies, who remained unbeaten at 6-0-1 on the season. Six different Auggies scored goals in the game, and 14 different Auggies figured in the scoring with either a goal or an assist.

McClellan claimed his eighth multi-point game of his career and first collegiate hat trick. His five-point night matched his previous career high for points, when he scored two goals and had three assists in an Augsburg 8-2 win at Wisconsin-Superior on Dec. 7, 2012.

Augsburg claimed a 63-16 advantage in shots on-goal over Northland (1-7-0 overall), Augsburg's most shots in a game since a 67-shot effort in a 9-4 win at Hamline on Feb. 7, 1999. McClellan's four-goal effort was the first for an Auggie since John Lennartson had four goals in a 9-4 win over Lawrence (Wis.) on Dec. 30, 2011.

Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) had a goal and two assists for the Auggies, while Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had a goal and assist, and Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) had four assists -- the first four-assist effort for an Auggie since Joel Sauer had four assists in a 4-2 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2011.

Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS), Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Zach Blaisdell (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) had the other Auggie goals in the game. Augsburg led 4-0 after one period and 6-1 after two periods. McClellan scored his natural hat trick and Meier added a goal in the first period, while Almstrom and Krieger scored goals in the second period and Dick, McClellan and Blaisdell scored in the third frame.

Rory Vesel (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS), Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS), B.J. McClellan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), Will Barber (FY, Thorton, Colo./Chaparral HS) and George Jackson (JR, Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS) all added assists for the Auggies.

Nineteen Augsburg players have now contributed either a goal or an assist through the season's first seven games.

Northland's goals came from Louis Labbe (Sr, Quebec City, Quebec), assisted by Matt Hoszko (FY, St. Catharines, Ontario) 32 seconds into the second period; and from Nick Stirmel (FY, Altoona, Wis.), assisted by Nicholas Noto (SO, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) at the 4:08 mark of the third period.

John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 14 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Jesse DiLillo (SO, Fresno, Calif.) had 54 saves for Northland.

The teams complete the nonconference series on Saturday (11/23) at 3 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
