2013 MIAC BASEBALL AWARDS
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College baseball student-athletes
Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.),
Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) and
Ryan Sward (SR, Eagan, Minn.) earned all-conference honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, it was announced on Wednesday.
In addition, LaChapelle and
Ryan Mestnik (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) earned MIAC All-Defensive Team honors, and
Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
The all-conference honor was the second for Carl, who was an All-MIAC selection last year, and LaChapelle, who earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors by being nominated for the honor by the Augsburg coaching staff last year.
A two-year starter at shortstop, Carl hit .323 (40-of-124) this season, with 21 runs scored, seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 23 RBI, 10 walks, six stolen bases, a .444 slugging percentage and a .374 on-base percentage. Carl hit safely in 28 of his 37 games this season, including nine multiple-hit games and four multiple-RBI games. He was a part of 22 double plays on defense this season.
In his three-year career at Augsburg (84 games, 79 starts), Carl is hitting .340 (87-of-256), with 47 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 55 RBI, 20 walks, 15 stolen bases, a .473 slugging percentage and a .388 on-base percentage. His 109 defensive assists this season were tops
among MIAC players in overall statistics.
Carl also earned American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second-team honors last season. Also a wide receiver for the Augsburg football team, Carl earned multiple honors in 2012, being named to the All-MIAC first team, the D3football.com All-West Region first team and the D3football.com All-America first team.
LaChapelle had the best hitting year of his collegiate career in 2013, hitting .364 (43-of-118), the second-best batting average on the team. He scored 23 runs and had 10 doubles, one triple, 18 RBI, 15 walks, a team-high 15 stolen bases, a .466 slugging percentage and .434 on-base percentage. He hit safely in 26 of his 39 games played this season, with 12 multiple-hit games and two multiple-RBI games. His .364 batting average was 15th-best among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his 15 stolen bases were second-most in the MIAC.
LaChapelle also had a .967 fielding percentage, with just five errors in 152 defensive chances, and was a part of 18 double plays this season. His 93 defensive assists were fifth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.
A three-year starter at second base for the Auggies, LaChapelle finished his career (128 games 111 starts) with a .302 batting average (104-of-344), with 65 runs scored, 13 doubles, four triples, a home run, 39 RBI, 37 walks, 26 stolen bases, a .372 slugging percentage and a .373 on-base percentage.
Sward also had a career year for the Auggies in 2013, hitting .363 (53-of-146), leading the team in at-bats, hits, runs scored (28), doubles (12), triples (4) and RBI (36), while also contributing seven walks and three stolen bases. He had a .390 on-base percentage and team-high .500 slugging percentage this season. He hit safely in 31 of his 39 games this season, with team-highs of 14 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI games this year.
His 53 hits were third-most among MIAC players in overall statistics this season, while his 146 at-bats were tops, his four triples were fourth-best, his 36 RBI were fifth-best, his 73 total bases were sixth-best, his .363 batting average was 15th best and his .500 slugging percentage was 17th-best.
Sward was one of the best defensive first-basemen in the conference this season, with just three errors in 329 defensive changes (.991 fielding percentage), while being a part of 22 double plays. His 329 total chances and 309 putouts were tops among MIAC players in overall statistics.
In his three-season career with the Auggies, Sward finished with a .325 batting average (80-of-246), with 42 runs scored, 17 doubles, four triples, one home run, 55 RBI, nine walks, four stolen bases, a .439 slugging percentage and .346 on-base percentage. Defensively, he had a .988 career fielding percentage, with just five errors in 421 defensive chances.
Mestnik, a pitcher, joined LaChapelle on the MIAC All-Defensive Team. Defensively, Mestnik had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, with no errors in 16 defensive chances. On the season, Mestnik finished with a 2-2 record and 5.55 earned-run average in nine appearances (seven starts), including one complete game. In 35.2 innings pitched this season, Mestnik struck out nine while walking 10 and allowing a .306 opponent batting average.
In his two seasons at Augsburg (22 appearances, nine starts), he has a 10-4 career record with a 3.53 ERA and five complete games, including three shutouts. In 94.1 innings pitched, Mestnik has 33 strikeouts against 20 walks and a .246 opponent batting average.
Pavlisick, a catcher, was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
Pavlisick hit .216 (21-of-97) this season, with 12 runs scored, six doubles, one home run, 16 RBI, 13 walks, a stolen base, a .309 slugging percentage and a .347 on-base percentage. He threw out 12 runners trying to steal bases in 44 attempts this season, tied for tops among MIAC catchers this season.
In his four seasons at Augsburg (62 games, 41 starts), Pavlisick finished with a .225 batting average (27-of-120), with 15 runs scored, eight doubles, a home run, 17 RBI, one stolen base, 16 walks, a .317 slugging percentage and a .352 on-base percentage.
Under 10th-year head coach
Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished the 2013 season at 24-15 overall -- Augsburg's fourth 20-plus-win campaign in the last five years -- while going 11-9 in MIAC play. Augsburg earned a trip to the MIAC postseason playoffs for the second time in the last four years, and the third time in Bateman's tenure, in 2013.
