Auggies win 5th straight, 85-67 at Bethel

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Three of the top five scorers in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's men's basketball overall statistics are from Augsburg College. And all three kept up their hot scoring streaks in Augsburg's 85-67 victory over Bethel University on Saturday afternoon at Bethel's Robertson Center.

Center Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.), the MIAC's leading scorer in overall play (20.1 points per-game), scored 24 points with 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots -- his fourth point-rebound double-double of the season and sixth time in his last seven games scoring 20-plus points.

Wing Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), fourth in MIAC overall scoring (16.9 ppg), scored 29 points, while collecting four assists and two steals. Seidlitz connected on 5-of-8 from three-point range, tying his career high for three-pointers made in a game and giving him 31 three-pointers this season, third-most among MIAC players in overall statistics. He now has 101 three-pointers in his Auggie career -- the 11th Auggie in school history to connect on 100 or more career three-pointers.

Forward Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.), fifth in MIAC overall scoring (16.4 ppg), scored 18 points, hitting 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, while adding two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

With the win, Augsburg improved to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in MIAC play, winning its fifth straight game and sixth in its last seven starts. Bethel drops to 9-5 overall, 5-4 in MIAC play.

It may be no surprise that the five-game winning streak began with the return of point guard Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) to the lineup, after missing the first part of the season due to illness. On Saturday, Hines scored 10 points with eight rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes of action. Hines is in second place on Augsburg's career assists list (since 1988-89 season) with 267.

Leading 37-35 at halftime, Augsburg pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Royals 48-32 and leading by as many as 21 points, en route to the 18-point win. Seidlitz scored 16 points in the second half, while Kornbaum scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Augsburg slowly pulled away from Bethel, outscoring the Royals 20-10 in the first 7:25 of the second half to take a 57-45 lead. The Royals trimmed the advantage to seven points, 68-61 with 5:16 left, but the Auggies outscored the Royals 17-6 down the stretch to claim the win.

Bethel was paced by Brycen Wotja, who scored 27 points on 10-of-17 from the field, and Luke Buttenhoff, who scored 12 points with three assists and two steals.

Augsburg shot a season-best 62.5 percent (30-of-48) from the field -- its seventh straight game shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Augsburg is now 8-1 this season when shooting better than 50 percent from the field. The Auggies also connected on 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Auggies also dominated in the low post, outrebounding Bethel by a 32-19 margin, while also scoring 14 second-chance points off of eight offensive rebounds. The Auggies converted 46 points in the paint, compared to 30 for Bethel.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Monday (1/18) at 7:45 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's at Si Melby Hall.
