COSIDA NEWS RELEASE ON CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA DIVISION III FOOTBALL TEAMS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College's Chris DeVet (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Zach Swingen (JR, Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton HS) were named to the Capital One Academic All-America football squad for NCAA Division III, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Tuesday. DeVet was selected as a first-team member, while Swingen was a second-team selection.

A chemistry major with a 3.80 grade-point average, DeVet is the eighth Augsburg student-athlete to ever earn multiple Academic All-America honors, after being a second-team honoree in 2013. A chemistry and biology major with a 3.96 GPA, the Academic All-America honor is the first for Swingen in his career. Both were named to the Capital One Academic All-District squad in November.

Augsburg student-athletes have been honored 32 times with CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1981, including 19 since 2005. Augsburg football players have earned 11 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1981. This is the third time two Auggie football players have been honored in the same year; Ted Schultz and Scott Hvistendahl both earned Academic All-America football honors in 1997, and DeVet and Chad Thompson both earned honors in 2013.

7169The award was the latest for DeVet, who was named as the Mike Stam Award-winner as the outstanding interior lineman (offense or defense) in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. He earned All-MIAC first-team honors for the second straight season in 2014. DeVet is also a two-time Academic All-District and Academic All-MIAC honoree.

DeVet finished his senior season with 53 tackles (22 solo), including 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles for-loss, both second-most among MIAC players in overall statistics. He added two quarterback hurries, a pass breakup, two forded fumbles and two punt recoveries. He had five-plus tackles in six of his 10 games this season, including a 10-tackle, two-sack effort in Augsburg's 62-61 win at Bethel on Nov. 15. On special teams, he gained 75 yards on two fake-punt runs, including a run for a 53-yard touchdown against Carleton on Sept. 20.

He finished his career with 168 tackles (71 solo), including 32.5 tackles for-loss and 13.0 sacks. He had five pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles in his career.

8802Swingen was named to the All-MIAC second team this season, his first all-conference honor. He was an Academic All-MIAC selection in 2013.

Swingen was a versatile member of an offensive line that allowed the Auggies to average 450.7 yards per-game this season, fourth-most among MIAC teams in overall statistics. Augsburg's 287.4 passing yards per-game were second-most among MIAC teams this season, while its 163.3 rushing yards per-game were sixth-best. Augsburg had 300-plus yards of total offense in eight of its 10 games, while allowing 19 sacks and 52 tackles for-loss this season.

In Swingen's three years as a starter on the offensive line, Augsburg has averaged 458.6 yards of total offense per-game (13,757 total yards) -- 267.5 passing yards per-game (8,025 total) and 167.7 rushing yards per-game (3,353 total) -- while allowing 27 sacks and 92 tackles for-loss.

The Capital One Academic All-America program is administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes, who have already earned Academic All-District first-team honors, are eligible for inclusion on the Academic All-America team. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institutions, have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Academic All-America ballot is voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

The Capital One Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division III Academic All-America teams program. This is the fourth year of the expanded Academic All-America program, as CoSIDA has moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I), doubling the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members.

Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America programs since 2011. An NCAA Corporate Champion, Capital One began its affiliation with college sports with the sponsorship of the 2001 Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl) and ESPN's Capital One Bowl Week. In addition, Capital One sponsors the ABC College Football Halftime Report, Capital One All-America Mascot team, Capital One Academic All Program, and supports all 89 NCAA Championships including the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, and numerous other collegiate athletics programs.
