MINNEAPOLIS -- The final day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships proved to be another record-breaking performance for the Augsburg College women's swimming and diving team, as the Auggies claimed school records in seven events on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
As a result, Augsburg claimed a ninth-place finish as a team in the 11-team conference meet with 115 team points -- both school-record finishes for the Auggies. Augsburg had finished 10th as a team in 2011, and its previous record for team points was 81 in the 2005 championships.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way our team came out and competed the past three days," said
Steve Webb, who completed his first season as Augsburg's head coach. "This meet put an exclamation point on the greatest season in the program's history."
In all, Augsburg swimmers and divers set school records in 11 individual events and four relays during the conference championships -- three records on Thursday, five records on Friday and seven records on Saturday.
Kelsey Knollmueller (SO, Oakdale, Minn.) set three individual school records on Saturday. She reached the consolation final for the second time in this year's championships, this time in the 200-yard breaststroke. She claimed a school-record 2:30.92 time in the preliminaries, then broke the record again in the final with a 12th-place, 2:29.89 time. She ended up taking almost six seconds off her prior school record in the event.
Knollmueller also placed 15th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a school-record 18:46.85, which included a school-record 11:23.11 1,000-yard split time. Her 1,650 time was 28 seconds faster than the previous school record of 19:14.90, set by Kasi Clauson Lange '08 in the 2008 conference meet.
Diver
Hannah Thiry (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) made Augsburg history with the school's best-ever individual finish in the conference meet, finishing 10th in the 1-meter diving competition with a school-record 306.95 11-dive score. She also finished 11th in the 3-meter diving competition, which had matched the previous best-ever conference individual finish, when Clauson Lange finished 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2005.
Two seniors capped their careers with school records in their final individual events.
Elizabeth Hilgendorf (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.) finished 21st in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries in a school-record 55.83-second time, taking 1.23 seconds off the previous record, set earlier this year by teammate
Emilyjohn Connors (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Orono HS). Hilgendorf finished her career as the school record-holder in both sprint freestyle events, the 50 (25.39) and 100.
Elianna Bier (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) capped her career with another record in the 200-yard backstroke, as she took 5.68 seconds off her previous record in the event with a 27th-place, 2:22.54 finish in the preliminaries. Bier finished her career as the school record-holder in both the 100 (1:05.78) and 200 backstroke.
"It was great to send Elly and Lizzy off with two new individual school records as well as numerous relay records. Both of them will be greatly missed," Webb said.
Three other Auggies also competed in the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries, with Connors finishing 27th in 57.69 seconds,
Hannah Schmit (FY, Tomahawk, Wis.) finishing 36th in 1:01.98 and
Casey Regnier (FY, Neenah, Wis.) finishing 37th in 1:02.10.
The capper of Augsburg's MIAC Championships performance came in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Connors, Hilgendorf, Knollmueller and Schmit finished ninth in 3:49.17, a school record by 5.15 seconds over the previous mark set earlier this season.
"Our future looks very bright, as we return our two individual point-scorers from this meet in
Hannah Thiry and
Kelsey Knollmueller. We also look for some continued improvement in the rest of the returners and are already building another great recruiting class," Webb said.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Three more individual school records and one relay record fell by the wayside for the Augsburg College women's swimming and diving team during Friday's sessions at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Kelsey Knollmueller (SO, Oakdale, Calif.) broke her school record twice in the 400-yard individual medley on Friday, finishing 12th in the consolation final. In the preliminaries, she took nearly four seconds off her previous school record (4:57.36) with a 4:53.42 time, earning her a spot in the consolation final in the event. Her time was the 11th-fastest in the preliminaries. In the finals, she took nearly three more seconds off the record, with a 4:50.97, 12th-place finish.
Knollmueller's appearance in the consolation final marked the fifth time an Augsburg swimmer has reached a conference meet evening final in program history; Kasi Clauson Lange '08 reached conference consolation finals four times, twice each in the 2004 and 2005 MIAC Championships.
Diver
Hannah Thiry (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) set a new 11-dive school record in the 3-meter diving competition with a 324.15 score, finishing 11th in the semifinals on Thursday. Her 11th-place finish matches the current best individual finish ever by an Auggie competitor at the MIAC Championships, matching the 11th-place finish by Clauson Lange in the 100-yard breaststroke in the 2005 conference meet.
Elianna Bier (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS), who set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke on Thursday with a 1:05.78 split as part of the Auggies' 400-yard medley relay, swam another sub-1:06 time as an individual in the 100 on Friday, finishing 22nd in the preliminaries with a 1:05.95 time -- the second-fastest in the event in school history.
In the morning preliminaries,
Emilyjohn Connors (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Orono HS) set a personal-best time in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 28th in 2:05.67 -- the fourth-fastest time in the event in school history. But in the evening, Connors then broke the school record in the event with her opening split as a part of Augsburg's 800-yard freestyle relay. Her 2:03.18 split time bettered the old school record of 2:04.73, set by Clauson Lange in 2008.
Augsburg's 200-yard medley relay of Bier, Knollmueller,
Casey Regnier (FY, Neenah, Wis.) and
Elizabeth Hilgendorf (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.) claimed a new school record with a ninth-place finish in 1:58.53, breaking the old mark of 2:00.24 set in 2007. Augsburg's 800-yard freestyle relay of Connors,
Hannah Schmit (FY, Tomahawk, Wis.), Bier and Regnier finished 10th in 8:50.80.
As a team, Augsburg stands in ninth place in the 11-team women's competition with 83 points, already the most points ever scored by Augsburg in the MIAC Championships, breaking the old mark of 81 points set in the 2005 conference meet.

MINNEAPOLIS --
Elizabeth Hilgendorf (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.) set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle, and
Hannah Thiry (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) qualified for the finals in the 3-meter diving competition, highlighting Augsburg College's first day of competition at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Hilgendorf broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a 25.39-second time, good for 22nd place in the preliminaries. The old school record of 25.91 seconds was set at last year's MIAC Championships by
Kelsey Knollmueller (SO, Oakdale, Calif.). The time took 0.71 off of Hilgendorf's previous personal-best of 26.10 seconds.
Thiry, who has had a record-breaking season in diving for the Auggies, qualified for Friday's 3-meter diving final with a score of 172.60 in the preliminaries, good for 13th place. Thiry has a chance to record the best-ever individual finish for an Auggie competitor at the MIAC Championships; the current school-best finish was by Kasi Clauson Lange '08, who recorded an 11th-place finish in the 2005 championships in the 100-yard breaststroke.
In Thursday's evening session, Augsburg recorded its second-ever podium finish at the MIAC Championships, as the 200-yard freestyle relay ofÂ
Emilyjohn Connors (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Orono HS), Knollmueller, Hilgendorf and
Hannah Schmit (FY, Tomahawk, Wis.) finished in eighth place in a school-record time of 1:43.90, taking more than two seconds off the old school mark of 1:46.04, set in 2007. The 2007 relay also finished eighth at the MIAC Championships -- the best-ever relay finish for an Augsburg squad at the conference meet.
Another school record was set in the 400-yard medley relay, as the Auggie quartet of
Elianna Bier (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS), Knollmueller, Hilgendorf and Connors smashed the old record with a ninth-place, 4:21.81 finish, breaking the old mark of 4:26.90, set last year. Bier's 1:05.78 opening 100-yard backstroke split time in the relay also is a school record for the event, breaking her old record of 1:06.84, set last year.
In the morning session, Connors finished 26th in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:41.74 time, the ninth-fastest time in the event in school history.
Schmit and
Casey Regnier (FY, Neenah, Wis.) also competed in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries, with Schmit finishing 35th in a season-best 27.59 seconds and Regnier finishing 38th in 28.38 seconds.
After the first day of the three-day competition, Augsburg stands in an eighth-place tie in the 11-team women's competition with 40 points.
AUGSBURG PREVIEW
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's swimming and diving team will compete at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships this weekend at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Seven Auggies will compete in a total of 11 individual events, and five Auggie relays will also compete at the championships. The meet begins on Thursday (2/13) and runs through Saturday (2/15). Kelsey Knollmueller (SO, Oakdale, Calif.) will compete in three events, with a strong chance to earn spots in either the "A" or "B" final in each. She holds the 12th-fastest time on the
conference's "psych sheet" in the 400-yard individual medley (school-record 4:57.36), the 16th-fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke (school-record 2:35.55) and the 17th-fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:37.63).

Diver
Hannah Thiry (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) has had a tremendous debut season for the Auggies, and will enter the conference meet with the sixth-best score among conference competitors in the 3-meter diving (279.65 - 11 dives) competition and ninth-best score in the 1-meter diving (267.15 - 11 dives) competition.
Elizabeth Hilgendorf (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.),
Hannah Schmit (FY, Tomahawk, Wis.) and
Casey Regnier (FY, Neenah, Wis.) will each compete in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events. Hilgendorf has the 23rd-fastest time in the conference in the 50 (26.10 seconds) and 29th-fastest time in the 100 (57.24 seconds), while Schmit is 39th (27.93) and 41st (1:02.21) in the events, and Regnier is 41st (27.96) and 43rd (1:05.34) in the events.
Elianna Bier (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) will compete for the Auggies in both backstroke events, entering with the 29th-fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.24) and 40th-fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:33.56). She set school records in both events (1:06.84 - 100; 2:28.22 - 200) at last year's MIAC Championships.
