Kornbaum named as finalist for Jostens Trophy

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's basketball post player Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) was named on Tuesday as one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding student-athlete in NCAA Division III men's basketball.

According to the finalist announcement release, the "Jostens Trophy is awarded to an outstanding NCAA Division III men's and women's basketball player who excels on the floor, in the classroom and in the community." The award is presented by the Salem (Va.) Rotary Club, with the winners honored on March 20 during the NCAA Division III National Championships at the Salem Civic Center.

Kornbaum was one of the most dominant big men in small-college basketball this season, averaging 19.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per-game. He was the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's scoring champion in both overall (19.3) and conference games-only (19.1). In MIAC overall statistics, Kornbaum led the league in points scored (502), field goals made (208) and blocked shots (43), while ranking second in field-goal percentage (.667), rebounds per-game (7.9), overall rebounds (205) and offensive rebounds (66), and ranking third in defensive rebounds (139).

Among NCAA Division III players nationally, Kornbaum ranks fourth in field-goal percentage (.667) and ninth in field goals made (208), while ranking 58th in points per-game (19.3). He recorded six point-rebound double-doubles this season, while recording 20-plus points 13 times.

In two seasons at Augsburg after transferring from Division II Minnesota-Duluth (54 games, 54 starts), Kornbaum recorded 1,015 points (18.8 ppg), along with 430 rebounds (8.0 rpg), 81 blocked shots, 31 steals and 84 assists. His 1,015 Augsburg points are 20th-most in school history, while his 18.8 points per-game are fifth-best and 8.0 rebounds per-game are tied for ninth-best. His 81 blocked shots are fifth-most in school history, and his .625 field-goal percentage is second-best.

Including his two seasons at Minnesota-Duluth (107 games, 57 starts), Kornbaum finished his career with 1,296 points (12.1 ppg). 607 rebounds (5.7 rpg), 126 blocked shots, 88 assists, 40 steals and a .611 field-goal percentage.

A physics major with a 3.5714 grade-point average, Kornbaum earned National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court honors in 2012-13. He served as a research assistant in the University of Michigan's Research Experience for Undergraduates-Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences (REU-AOSS) program in the summer of 2013. 

He served on mission trip to Costa Rica with ES Sports in 2011 and 2012, as a volunteer at Feed My Starving Children with the men's basketball team in 2012, as part of a team program that adopted four Minneapolis blocks in 2013-14 with scheduled cleanup dates, and as a volunteer at Seward Montessori School in Minneapolis.

Kornbaum was one of two Minnesota collegians to be named among the 10 men's basketball finalists, joining Galen Holzhueter of Martin Luther College. Other men's finalists: Richie Bonney of Hobart (N.Y.), Trevor Johnson of Nebraska Wesleyan, Gordon Lyons of SUNY-Geneseo (N.Y.), Dustin McConnell of Whitworth (Wash.), Tyler Peters of Wheaton (Ill.), Ryan Sheehan of Nichols (Mass.), Jared Suderley of Hartwick (N.Y.) and David Thompson of Case Western Reserve (Ohio).
