Amanda Eaton (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) claimed seven strikeouts against no walks in a relief effort in the second game, but her Augsburg College softball team suffered a sweep by St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (3-21 overall, 0-6 MIAC) dropped both games to St. Catherine (4-10 overall, 2-0 MIAC), falling 3-0 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game. The games were originally scheduled to be played at St. Catherine, but were switched to Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field due to wintry field conditions. St. Catherine was the designated home team in both games.
Eaton entered the second game in relief of starter
Devon Shaut (SR, Merritt Island, Fla.) and threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven batters while allowing no walks and five hits. Shaut had a strikeout and walk in her 1.1 innings of work.
Augsburg's lone run in the second game came in the fourth inning.
Emily Smith (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) reached second base on a long fly ball that was dropped, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a wild pitch. St. Catherine took advantage of three Augsburg errors in the game, incluidng an error in each of the first two innings. Three of the four runs charged to Augsburg starter Shaut were unearned.
Augsburg was limited to two hits in the second game -- singles by
Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Lauren Torborg (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) in the sixth inning. Jessica Tyminski and Raven Baker had two hits each for St. Catherine in the second game. Lindsey Klein threw a complete-game win for the WIldcats, striking out five.
A two-run homer by Tyminski gave the Wildcats the early lead in the first inning of the first game. Another Wildcat run was scored in the fourth inning, as Alyssa Luedtke drove in a run on a groundout. Rachel Thompson struck out two while walking one to earn the first-game pitching win for the Wildcats.
Olivia Boerschinger (SR, Neenah, Wis.) pitched a complete game for Augsburg. The Auggies had three hits in the first game -- singles by
Amanda Niznik (FY, Columbia Heights, Minn.) in the second inning, by
Brenna Nakonechny (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) in the third inning and by Smith in the sixth inning.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/9) at 4 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's at Edor Nelson Field.
