Augsburg season ends in OT heartbreaker

BLAINE, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's hockey team made its first appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs since 2004-05, and despite an incredible game, suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Bethel University in a playoff semifinal game on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despie outshooting the Royals by a 33-21 margin in the game, including a 15-3 advantage in the second period, the Auggies gave up a break-away goal 1:58 into the overtime period as the Auggies' incredible season came to an end.
• Erika Allen (SR, Roseville, Minn.) recorded 20 saves in goal for the Auggies.
• Megan Johnson (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Kayla Fuechtmann (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) led the Auggies with five shots on-goal apiece, while Darby Lindgren (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) had four shots.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The Auggies qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the fifth time in school history, and the first time since a three-year playoff run from 2002-03 to 2004-05. Augsburg won the inaugural MIAC playoff tournament in the 1999-00 season.
• Augsburg has showed continuous improvement under sixth-year head coach Michelle McAteer. The Auggies third-place conference finish was the team's highest MIAC finish since the team won the conference regular-season and playoff titles in 1999-00.


FOR THE FOES
• Hadley Cookson scored for the Royals 1:58 into the overtime period, an unassisted breakaway goal to the top right corner of the net.
• Michelle Klimstra had 33 saves in goal for Bethel.
