Brown MIAC Coach of Year; 8 Auggies earn MIAC honors

9059MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's hockey coach Chris Brown was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, and eight Auggies received recognition in the conference's postseason awards, announced on Monday.

Brown led the Auggies to the MIAC regular-season and postseason playoff championships, earning a berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament -- each accomplishment the first for the Auggies since the 1997-98 season. Finishing 11-3-2 in league play, Augsburg will carry a 17-8-2 record into NCAA competition, Augsburg's most wins in both overall and league play since 1997-98 (21-8-4 overall, 12-3-1 MIAC). Augsburg will play an NCAA quarterfinal game at St. Norbert (Wis.) on March 19 at 7 p.m.

The MIAC Coach of the Year honor is the second for Brown, who also earned the honor in 2006-07, his first year as Augsburg's head coach. He also earned Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year honors twice when he was head coach at Marian (Wis.), and has been an American Hockey Coaches Association Division III Men's Hockey Coach of the Year finalist three times.

In 15 seasons as a head coach, Brown has a 186-177-28 coaching record, including a 117-121-20 record in 10 seasons at Augsburg.

Five Auggies earned All-MIAC honors -- forwards Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.), goalie Jordyn Kaufer (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) and defenders Eli May (SO, Eagan, Minn.) and Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS). Forwards Mack Ohnsted (SR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention recognition, and defender Lucas Hendrickson (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. The MIAC honors are the second for Chapman and Ohnsted, who both earned All-MIAC honors last season. Each of the other six Auggies earned their first conference honors this season.
 
10499A team captain this season, Chapman stands second on the team in scoring with 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists), including five goals and six assists in MIAC play. He scored either a goal or assist in 17 of his 27 games, including three multiple-point games and two multiple-goal games. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, Chapman is tied for 12th in points, tied for 10th in goals, tied for 11th in power-play points (seven). In 71 career games, Chapman now has 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points.
 
10502Flynn has led the team this season in scoring (30 points) and goals (16), while standing second in assists (14), including nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in MIAC play. He also led the team with five power-play goals, two shorthanded goals and three game-winning goals. He has had either a goal or assist in 17 of his 27 games, including eight multiple-point games and four multiple-goal games. Flynn stands fourth among MIAC players in overall points, tied for third in goals, tied for eighth in assists, tied for 11th in power-play points (seven), tied for fifth in power-play goals and tied for first in shorthanded points (four). In 53 career games, Flynn now has 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points.
10507A transfer from Concordia-Moorhead, Kaufer has had an impressive first season as an Auggie, with a 16-5-1 record, 2.01 goals-against-average and .929 save percentage, with 598 saves and three shutouts. He leads the MIAC in GAA, save percentage and winning percentage. Among Division III goalies nationally, he stands 15th in winning percentage, with his 16 wins tied for third-most nationally. He stands 18th nationally in GAA and 20th in save percentage. In his 38-game collegiate career (37 starts), Kaufer has a 23-10-4 record, 2.09 GAA and .923 save percentage, with 982 saves and four shutouts.
10508May leads Augsburg's defenders in scoring this season, with nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points, incluidng two power-play goals and a shorthanded talley. He had four goals and five assists for nine points in league play. He ranks third in scoring among MIAC defenders in overall statistics, with his nine goals tops among defenders. He has had either a goal or assist in 15 of his 26 games, including four multiple-point games. In 51 career games, May has 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points.
10518Vesel stands fourth in scoring on the Auggie roster and second among the team's defenders, with two goals and a team-high 16 assists for 18 points, including a goal and six assists for seven points in MIAC play. He ranks fourth in scoring among MIAC defenders in overall statistics, with his 16 assists second-most among league defenders and tied for sixth-most among all MIAC players. He has had either a goal or assist in 13 of his 27 games, including four multiple-point games. In 77 career games, Vesel has 12 goals and 26 assists for 38 points.
10511Ohnsted scored the game-winning goal in the third overtime of Augsburg's 5-4 win over Saint John's in the MIAC playoff title game, sending the Auggies to the NCAA Division III national tournament. He has scored six goals with 11 assists for 17 points this season, including two power-play goals, a shorthanded tally and two game-winning goals. He recorded two goals and seven assists for nine points in league play. He has had a goal or assist in 12 of his 27 games this season, including five multiple-point games. He has played in 103 career games, scoring 27 goals with 50 assists for 77 points.
10516Stewart had a solid year in his first Auggie campaign, after playing his first two years at Norwich (Vt.). He has recorded eight goals with seven assists for 15 points, including a shorthanded goal and two game-winning tallies, with all his points coming in conference play. He has recorded a goal or assist in 10 of his 26 games, including five multiple-point games. In his 73-game collegiate career, he has 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points.
10504Hendrickson was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Hendrickson has been a team leader for the Auggies, serving as assistant captain in his junior and senior seasons. This season, he has a goal and nine assists for 10 points, all in league play, including a four-assist effort in Augsburg's 8-2 win over Hamline on Feb. 5. In his 103-game Augsburg career, he has seven goals and 31 assists for 38 points.
