Auggies get 6 bonus-point wins in 37-14 victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Recording bonus-point decisions in all six of its individual bout wins, along with a forfeit, the Augsburg College wrestling team scored a 37-14 dual-meet victory over Saint John's University on Sunday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg, ranked No. 2 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll, collected three pins, two major decisions, a technical fall and a forfeit to claim the victory over the Johnnies. 
• The Auggies built a 22-0 lead after four bouts, starting with a 12-2, major-decision win by No. 5-ranked 125-pounder Victor Gliva (FY, Farmington, Minn.). Gliva used two takedowns and two near-falls to build an 11-0 lead after two periods, eventually earning 2:06 riding time for the bonus-point win, his 11th of the season (five major decisions, two technical falls, four pins). He extended his personal winning streak to 14 straight matches, improving to 22-4 on the season.
• At 141, David Flynn (FY, Jordan, Minn./Scott West), a mid-season transfer from Division I North Dakota State, improved to 21-5 on the season (12-2 at Augsburg) with his 10th win in a row, scoring a 2:40 pin of Andrew Smith. Flynn now has 10 pins on the season, six since joining the Auggies at the semester break.
• Ryan Epps (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) followed Flynn's pin with one of his own, building an 8-0 lead before claiming a 4:48 pin of Brandon Schorr at 149. Now 22-3 on the season, Epps has 10 bonus-point victories (four pins, two technical falls, four major decisions).
• No. 3-ranked heavyweight Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) claimed his ninth pin the season, ending the Auggie victory with a 2:03 pin of Colin Fisher. Longendyke improved to 137-27 in his college career with 78 pins, and 96-6 in his three seasons at Augsburg with 55 pins.
• Lucas Jeske (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) improved to 11-4 on the season with a 15-0, 5:30 technical-fall victory over Jack Barsody at 165 pounds. Jeske collected a takedown, reversal, two four-point near-falls and a two-point near-fall to end the match early in the third period.
• No. 2-ranked 184 pounder Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) improved to 21-1 on the season with his 18th straight victory, a 16-3 major-decision triumph over Luke Dodd. Webster used four takedowns, a two-point near-fall and 1:34 of riding time to collect his 16th bonus-point victory of the season (five pins, four technical falls, seven major decisions).
• Sam Bennyhoff (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), ranked No. 6 nationally at 133 improved to 18-6 on the year with a forfeit win.
• On Saturday, 12 Augsburg White Team (junior varsity) wrestlers competed at the Minnesota West-Worthington Open (click here for Augsburg results). Alex Wilson (SO, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Tanner Vassar (FY, Maple Lake, Minn.) shared the title at 149 pounds to lead the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 313-48-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 44 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 304-47-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 229-37-1 against Division III opponents.
• Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is now 206-7 since the 1975-76 season.

FOR THE FOES
• Saint John's 174-pounder Teddy Erickson improved to 11-7 with a third-period, 16-1 technical-fall victory over Jackson Graham (JR, Apple Valley, Minn.).
• Robert Tait scored a 4-1 win over Sebastian Larson (JR, River Falls, Wis.) at 197, improving to 7-1 on the season.
• At 157, Jerod Novak was awarded a first-period, injury-default win over No. 9-ranked Grant Parker (SR, Onalaska, Wis.).
