11 Auggies earn MIAC football honors

2017 MIAC FOOTBALL AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eleven Augsburg University football players have earned postseason honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their performances during the 2017 season, it was announced on Tuesday.

Four Auggies earned All-MIAC First Team honors: wide receiver Nick Heenie (JR, Victoria, Minn./Waconia HS), defensive back Jabri Guy (SR, Moline, Ill./Eagan (Minn.) HS), punter Glenn Meyers (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) and kick returner Undre Smith-Brewer (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS). Three Auggies earned All-MIAC Second Team honors: offensive lineman Christopher Lemke (JR, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS), defensive back Isiah Malone (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) and offensive/defensive lineman Daulton Olinger (SR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS). Quarterback Quinn Frisell (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), linebacker Derek Glynn (SO, Lonsdale, Minn./Faribault HS) and wide receiver Ray Guyton Jr. (SR, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS) were named as All-MIAC Honorable Mention, and defensive lineman Josh Bentil (SR, Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Heenie, Lemke, Malone and Olinger were All-MIAC Second Team selections in 2016, while Guy and Lemke were All-MIAC Honorable Mention selections last year. It's the first conference football postseason honors for Meyers, Smith-Brewer, Frisell, Glynn, Guyton and Bentil.

Under 13th-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 4-6 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play in 2017. 

13055Heenie established himself as the top receiver in the conference in 2017, leading the MIAC's overall statistics in receiving yardage (983), yards per-game (98.3) and receiving touchdowns (15). His 62 receptions, 6.2 receptions per-game and 15.9 yards per-catch average were all third-best among MIAC receivers. Among NCAA Division III receivers nationally, Heenie ranks seventh in receiving touchdowns. As a sign of his dominance, no other conference receiver has more than 816 receiving yards or seven receiving touchdowns this season.

Heenie recorded seven games with 100-plus receiving yards in 2017, including a 10-catch, 178-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Auggies' 48-28 win at Carleton on Sept. 23. In his 22-game Augsburg career, Heenie now has 117 receptions for 1,585 yards (72.0 yards per-game, 13.5 yards per-catch) and 18 touchdowns.

13050A cornerback, Guy finished the season ranked third on the team with 77 tackles (51 solo), along with 4.5 tackles for-loss, a sack, three interceptions, five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. His 77 tackles are tied for fourth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics, while his three interceptions are tied for third-most. He returned an interception for a touchdown in Augsburg's 22-20 loss to St. Olaf on Oct. 14.

He recorded four games with 10-plus tackles on the year, including a 15-tackle (six solo) effort in Augsburg's 42-20 loss at Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 21. In his two seasons and 20 games as an Auggie after transferring from the North Dakota College of Science, Guy recorded 140 tackles (85 solo), with 10.5 tackles for-loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. 

13071Meyers was the MIAC's top punter in 2017, averaging 40.0 yards per-punt on 47 punts, placing seven inside the opponent 20-yard line and forcing 13 fair catches, second-most among league punters. His 40.0 yards per-punt average ranks 24th among NCAA Division III punters nationally. He had a career-high 61-yard punt in Augsburg's 38-16 win over Concordia-Wisconsin on Sept. 9, and recorded eight punts of 50 yards or more this year.

In his two seasons as an Auggie after transferring from Ridgewater Community College, Meyers averaged 37.1 yards per-punt on 110 punts, with only one punt blocked and one touchback. He had 13 punts of 50 yards or more in his two Auggie campaigns, placing 22 inside the opponent 20-yard line and forcing 21 fair catches.

13095Smith-Brewer was the MIAC's top kickoff returner in 2017, averaging a league-best 26.8 yards per-return on 16 returns. He set a school record with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Augsburg's 48-28 win at Carleton on Sept. 23. He also had two punt returns for 14 yards.

In his 25-game Augsburg career, Smith-Brewer averaged 23.4 yards per-return on 48 kick returns. Smith-Brewer was a two-sport athlete at Augsburg; in track and field, he was a four-time MIAC champion in the indoor 60-meter dash and four-time top-six finisher in the outdoor 100-meter dash in his career, earning five All-MIAC and six All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors in individual and relay events. He earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in the 60-meter dash.

13066A two-year starter at center for the Auggies, Lemke was part of an offensive line that enabled the team to average 359.4 yards per-game (855 rushing yards, 2,739 passing yards) in 2017, sixth-best among MIAC teams in overall statistics, while allowing 70 tackles for-loss and 25 sacks. Augsburg's 273.9 passing yards per-game was tops among MIAC teams at the conclusion of the regular season.

He has appeared in 24 games over his Augsburg career, including all 20 games in the last two seasons. During his 24 career games, Augsburg has produced 8,507 yards of total offense (354.5 yards per-game), including 2,693 rushing yards and 5,814 passing yards, while allowing 178 tackles for-loss and 63 sacks.

Earlier this month, Lemke was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for the second straight year. He is a biology and chemistry major with a 3.96 grade-point average.

13067Malone shined again in his cornerback role, finishing sixth on the team in tackles with 42 (31 solo), including a tackle for-loss, three interceptions, eight pass breakups and a fumble recovery. His interception in the end zone with one minute remaining in the game helped to cap Augsburg's 35-28 win over Hamline on Oct. 28, as the Auggies regained "The Hammer" trophy between the two rivals. His three interceptions and eight pass breakups were both tied for third-most among MIAC defenders.

Playing in all 40 games in four seasons as an Auggie, Malone finished with 166 tackles (120 solo), including 4.5 tackles for-loss, 10 interceptions, 26 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He scored two touchdowns on interception returns in his career. He also returned 44 kickoffs for an 18.3 yards per-return average and a touchdown in his career, along with 10 punt returns for a 10.6-yard average.

13081A defensive lineman, Olinger showed his versatility this season, shifting to the offensive line in the last four games of the season, starting the final two games at right guard. On defense as a nose guard, Olinger finished the 2017 season with 20 tackles (eight solo), with 1.5 tackles for-loss and a blocked kick.

In his two seasons at Augsburg after transferring from Division II Sioux Falls (S.D.), Olinger finished with 56 tackles (19 solo), including 2.5 tackles for-loss, three pass breakups and a blocked kick.

13048Frisell transferred to Augsburg this season from Itasca Community College and made an immediate impact on the offense, finishing the season as the MIAC's top passing quarterback. He completed 206-of-362 passes for 2,575 yards and 26 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, leading the MIAC in passing yardage, yards per-game (257.5), completions, attempts and passing touchdowns. His 56.9 completion percentage and 134.8 quarterback efficiency rating were both fifth-best among MIAC quarterbacks, as was his 7.1 yards per-attempt average among league starters.

Frisell topped the 200-yard plateau in passing in seven games, including a 451-yard, five-touchdown effort in Augsburg's 42-37 loss to Gustavus on Sept. 16, while throwing for 449 yards and four touchdowns in Augsburg's 48-28 win at Carleton on Oct. 23, and 333 yards and four touchdowns in Augsburg's 42-7 win over Northwestern-St. Paul on Sept. 2. Frisell also scored two rushing touchdowns this year.

13049Glynn finished the season with 101 tackles (39 solo), leading the MIAC in total tackles and tackles per-game in overall statistics -- one of three Auggies to rank among the top four defenders in the MIAC in total tackles. He also led the Auggies with 10.5 tackles for-loss and 5.5 sacks, tied for fifth in the MIAC in sacks and tied for fifth in tackles for-loss. He also had a pass breakup 

Glynn recorded double-digit tackle totals in six games this season, including a 20-tackle (nine solo) effort in Augsburg's 22-20 loss to St. Olaf on Oct. 14. In his two seasons (20 games) as an Auggie, he now has 150 tackles (56 solo), including 14.5 tackles for-loss and 7.0 sacks.

13051Guyton transferred to Augsburg last season from San Diego Mesa Community College and started his Auggie career as a quarterback, but shifted to a receiver role midway through last season. He truly shined as a receiver this season, leading the Auggies and ranking second among MIAC receivers in total catches (67), recording 766 receiving yards and four touchdowns. His 766 receiving yards and 76.6 yards per-game were both fourth-best among MIAC receivers, while his 11.4 yards per-catch average was 10th-best.

In his two seasons as an Auggie (18 games), he caught 90 passes for 970 yards (53.9 yards per-game, 10.8 yards per-catch) with six touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown and passing touchdown in his career.

13030Bentil was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

A defensive lineman, Bentil recorded 35 tackles (13 solo) this season, along with 3.5 tackles for-loss, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble. He recorded a season-best 12 tackles in Augsburg's 22-20 loss to St. Olaf on Oct. 14. In his two seasons at Augsburg after transferring from Minnesota West Community College, Bentil finished with 46 tackles (16 solo) and 4.5 tackles for-loss.
