Three Auggies earn MIAC men's soccer honors

2017 MIAC MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Three Augsburg University men's soccer players earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason honors on Thursday, with midfielder Ebesa Hamid (JR, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/Addis International Academy) and forward Lionel Vang (SO, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) earning All-MIAC honors for the second straight year, and forward Jason Scheeler (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) being named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

12857Hamid has earned a reputation as one of the best central midfielders in the MIAC, a respect confirmed by his second straight selection to the all-conference team by the league's coaches. Missing the first seven games of the season due to injury, Hamid started the final 11 games, compiling 829 minutes played (75.4 minutes played per-game), with an assist in Augsburg's 3-2 win at Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 21.

Hamid has started all 30 games he has played in his two years of collegiate soccer, with a goal and two assists to his credit in 2,344 minutes played (78.1 minutes per-game). He earned NSCAA Division III All-North Region third-team honors last season.

For the second straight year, Vang led the Auggies in scoring, with six goals and an assist for 13 points, including a game-winning goal. His six goals were tied for ninth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics, with his 13 points tied for 15th-most. His four goals in MIAC games-only were tied for fourth-most, with his eight points tied for 10th-most. Vang had a goal or assist in six games this season, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in Augsburg's 3-2 win at Concordia.

In his two seasons at Augsburg (34 games), Vang now has 13 goals and three assists for 29 points, including four game-winning goals and two penalty-kick goals. His 13 goals are tied for 15th-most in program history.

12873Scheeler was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Scheeler's senior campaign was cut short due to a season-ending injury just eight games into the season. He recorded an assist during those first eight games. Scheeler ended his 64-game collegiate career with a goal and six assists for eight points. He has earned Academic All-MIAC honors each of the last two seasons.

Under 15th-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished 8-9-1 overall, 3-6-1 in MIAC play in 2017. Augsburg has recorded eight or more wins in 10 of the last 12 seasons.
