Auggies fall 4-2 to Johnnies, are No. 2 seed in playoffs

MINNEAPOLIS -- Will Peterson (JR, Eagan, Minn.) and Eric Brenk (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) scored goals for Augsburg College, but their squad ended its regular season with a 4-2 loss to Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey action on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Augsburg tied the game with goals by Peterson and Brenk, but Saint John's scored twice in a 4:11 span late in the game to claim the win in the regular-season finale for both teams.
• Peterson scored from Corbin Chapman (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) at the 19:22 mark of the second period, and Brenk scored from Nate Flynn (JR, Hastings, Minn.) and Luke Dietsch (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) on the power play at the 7:52 mark of the third period.
• Augsburg outshot Saint John's by a 38-35 margin in the game. Brenk had seven shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Flynn had five shots and Dylan Meier (SR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) had four shots.
Jordyn Kaufer (SR, Stillwater, Minn.) had 31 saves in goal for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The Auggies finished the regular season with 33 league points, second to St. Thomas' 36 points. The Auggies will be the No. 2 seed in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs, and will host No. 3-seed Saint Mary's next Saturday (2/25) at Ed Saugestad Rink. The Auggies claimed a 4-3 win and 5-5 tie (Saint Mary's 2-1 in shootout) with Saint Mary's on the weekend of Jan. 27-28.
• The loss snapped Augsburg's nine-game overall unbeaten streak (5-0-4) and 11-game MIAC unbeaten streak (6-0-5).

FOR THE FOES
• Kevin Becker scored at the 12:04 mark of the third period to give the Johnnies a 3-2 lead, and Joe Chitwood capped the scoring with a goal at the 16:15 mark.
• Huba Sekesi and Sam Valerius gave the Johnnies a 2-0 lead, Sekesi with a goal at the 7:12 mark of the first period and Valerius with a power-play goal at the 16:41 mark of the second period.
• Tyler Nelson had 36 saves in goal for the Johnnies.
